Teacher fired for duct-taping students mouths

Wow, how awful. I'm normally one to defend teachers, but this teacher was WAY out of line.

I wouldn't be a good teacher.
Nor, it seems, when I read posts from parents about how one has to "parent" today, would I be a good parent.

Good thing I don't have kids!

I want to know how much tape though. A very tiny piece that doesn't even cover the entire mouth and you can still stick your tongue out OR a long strip that wraps around the head a couple of times?

And comparing it to a horror movie? Get real! :sad2: Its not like the kids were bound and gagged. I'm sure their hands weren't tied and they could remove the tape themselves at anytime.

Guess I'm another who would be a bad parent by todays' standards. I believe she must have told them to stop plenty of times and even talked to the parents about it.

Of course not.

but the real cause of the kids not behaving, the parents, are not taking any responsibility. Otherwise the children would not have killed one teacher already and drove another to such extremes.

Mikeeee

Unbelievable! Out of that one article you have somehow concluded that a bunch of 7 yr. olds killed their first teacher????

Doesn't have to be "wrapped around their heads" to cause physical damage.. I'm known far and wide as the "Duct Tape Queen".. Had an incident where I took one small strip and without thinking stuck it on my chin while I was trying to close a box.. At the time I didn't realize that it had also stuck to a section of my lower lip.. When I took it off, it ripped the skin off of my lip, was bleeding badly, and was very, very sore for well over a week..

There's no justifiable excuse for this.. None..

Please, don't even try to justify it. Even if the teacher verbally in jest threatened to duct tape a child's mouth, it would be unaccpetable. Kids can't bully in schools these days, what makes it ok for teachers to, let alone act upon it.
Yes, teachers sometimes have talkative students, but ultimately, it's the teacher's job to manage the classroom effectively.

This article has a different spin on the incident...

The article makes no sense whatsoever - other than the teacher trying to "cover her own butt".. Teachers are not fired on a "whim" - I've seen some pretty horrific teachers hang on to their jobs.. If she was fired, it's more than likely the incident happened just as it was reported in the first article..

They are looking for a substitute teacher to take over the class. This will be the third teacher for the first grade class. Their first teacher died of a heart attack earlier this year.

Holy Moly!! Just how awful are these students?? :confused3
I am not, in any way, condoning what the teacher did but it sounds like those kids were a serious handful!

I was thinking the same thing! That teacher was way out of line. I'd be seriously Peeved if this happened to my kid!

Sometimes I wish I had duct tape to use on those girls who talk the whole time when I'm on Pirates at DL. I don't know who they are and they always look different, but man, they can't shut up.

I can SO totally see why someone would WANT to do this, but to actually do it...?

And yes, the parents really need to parent if the teacher has told them many times their kids won't shut up. The teacher and parents should have tag-teamed the kids instead of allowing it to come to this extreme.

It was 20 kids. T W E N T Y. Are you saying 20 sets of parents parented so poorly their teacher had to tape their mouths to keep them quiet in her classroom. And nothing said it was done to keep them from talking or that they were 'bad'.

Umm, what book were the 1st graders reading that tied into duct tape?

What makes you think the class is so awful? Because the first teacher unfortunately died of a heart attack?
And then they replaced her with what sounds like a young and probably relatively inexperienced teacher?

First graders are young pups who need to be given structure and nurtured, not intimidated.

When I was a preschool teacher I used to vent to DH about the kids after a hard day. He told me to duct tape them. We both then had a good laugh because we never dreamed anyone would actually DO it. :scared1:
