Would this make you angry as a parent? I would be upset that I was not notified of this ahead of time and I would HOPE that the kids were given the option of not viewing it.

Why not take the rabbits to a veterinarian to be checked out? If there was no hope, why not euthanize them by putting them to sleep? Why decapitate them with a shovel in front of students? Yikes!! She should be a marine, not a teacher! ;) I took an animal science class and my teacher brought in a deer he bagged for us to do a necropsy on. I still wonder if he should have done that.

Euthanasia means the death is peaceful. That is not euthanasia. Besides, the AVMA (Am Vet Med Assoc) issues updated euthanasia guidelines every year. I haven't looked it up, but I have the feeling that "shovel to the head" is not one of the acceptable methods.

Yes, I'd be angry. It's ignorant and careless behavior.

As far as the bagged deer -- it was careless to expose students to an animal that hadn't been preserved. Who knows what kind of diseases it could have been carrying?

Well, I can understand that if the bunnies were dying that its better to have them die quick and as painless as possible. BUt i do wonder if its time for this teacher to retire cause i have a few questions about her.

*How old are her students?

*Since the bunnies were part of the class so to speak why didn't the teacher have the kids hand raise the babies after their mother rejected them?

*Since she decided to euthanize them, why didn't she wait till she had a free moment with no students present?

In my own opinion its time for teacher to retire. Especially if her students were elementary age.

What a psycho- she wasn't "down on the farm" she was teaching a group of high school students. If my son or daughter were in that class she would be getting a piece of my mind that's for sure. I'm not a peta supporter but I'd go throw a bucket of red paint at her any day.

What was she hoping to teach the kids by killing those baby rabbits in front of them?:(

I did not read the article, the subject line was enough for me.....:(

BUT if my son was in her class & he had to witness that I would be up at the school faster then a speeding bullet. I would be giving EVERY one that matters a HUGE piece of my mind.

That is TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR!!!!!

that teacher is a whack job....

I'd refuse to let my child attend another class with her teaching.

I agree with others, she should have disposed of the bunnies { if it was absolutely neccessary } in a more humane method, out of sight of her students..

I would do everything I could to have her fired. That is unexcusable.

I saw this in the paper a few days ago. I was so upset and disgusted! I wish there was some way to get the police involved in this. It is really disturbing that a teacher is doing this in front of children, showing them that it is ok to smash an animal to death. I can just see some kid going home and looking around saying "hmmmm I wonder what would happen if I tried the same thing with this squirrel, or cat etc" Sick!!!!

I had the same thought...and then the kid would be arrested and sent to court ordered therapy

Oh my God! This just sickens me!! :( It really hits home for me seeing how I have spent so many months raising a baby bunny who's mother rejected her. I have seen how small and DEFENSELESS she was. I could not imagine how anyone could do that to a baby animal. If they were truly sick, she should of done the humane thing and taken them to a vet where they could of at least had a peaceful death. That is one image I am having a hard time getting out of my head! :( I think I am going to go give Thumper a hug...maybe that will help..............

Colleen,

I agree. Who was she to determine that they were too sick to survive? It would have been a WONDERFUL lesson in animal rehabilitation to at least TRY and raise the bunnies. Take them to a vet and let a professional decide if they are ill. If they are terminally ill, put them down peacefully. If not, it is a lesson in nurturing for the kids.

I'm shocked the school did not fire her or even suspend her! I do hope the animal cruelty charges go through and she gets charged the fines. At least then she will have SOME consequences for doing that.
