teacher discounts/perks?

The original poster was asking about discounts. This is the Budget Board. This is where these types of questions are supposed to be asked. This is not the board for social commentary. If you don't have a useful answer to the question asked, please don't say anything!

Kitten--a few other thoughts--

Look into renting DVC points, the Hilton at DTD often offers extremely attractive weekend rates, and if it's reopen, we always found POFQ to be very romantic.

Anne

You read my mind!
I have been thinking about renting points, but I will need to wait until I am sure about my dates. We will be celebrating our 30th anniversary,DS's 20th b'day, and DD's 11th b'day all next June!
I think we will have to go at the end of May when DD graduates from 5th grade and DS is between semesters at college.
I will start checking the DVC boards!!

I am a teacher in New York State ... and I sure don't make $50K!

Even though I teach in a Parochial school, I have friends who teach public and don't make that kind of $$. Not complaining ... just stating that teachers earn different wages dep. on how long they've been teaching, if they teach Public/Private/Parochial, the state they live in, etc., etc., etc.!

Can't blame anyone for looking for some deals!

ducklite,
My husband has been a 2nd grade public school teacher for 4 yrs. here in Florida.
His base salary is just over $29,000.
He mentors, tutors and right now is working at a migrant childrens camp sponsored thru the county.

He loves his job and can't wait to go for his national boards and masters!

(He also works part time at a department store where he started when he put himself thru school at night!)

Remember.. its whatever the traffic will bear and some states are better than others!!

We both come from NY (Eatern Long Island) and wouldn't expect to receive a NY salary here... but it would be nice!!!!

Every discount we can get helps and he deserves!!!!!!

Let's please get away from the debate over whether teachers, or firemen, or garbage collectors, or stay at home moms deserve any discounts or perks anywhere.

Let's get back to whether there ARE or ARE NOT discounts or other benefits of being a teacher at WDW.

Thank you!

(If you DO want to discuss whether certain occupations deserve discounts, please do so on the Debate Board.)

cherylcat,

I hope I don't get flamed for asking this here, but there was no PM button or e-mail button with your post.

My question: Where is the teaching resource center at EPCOT. My wife is a third grade teacher and has themed her classroom with Patriotic Mickey (it was decorated that way before 9/11). We go twice per year and haven't seen the teacher resource center in years...since before the space was converted to an Art store or Pin store. Anyway, where is it?

You may PM me or e-mail to keep from taking the board any further than I already have.

Thanks in advance.
Tom

To get back on topic, to my knowledge the S/D is the only discount on site for teachers. I know some of the other chains have gov't discounts. Raddisson has a gov't discount that you might qualify for. There is one near the WDW entrance near DTD. The last time we stayed there it was $75.00/night. That has been about three years ago. You could try calling the major chains in the area like Hilton, Hyatt, etc. and ask if they have a gov't discount that would include teachers.

Ditto on those that said to return the discussion to whether or not there are discounts available - this shouldn't be a discussion about whether or not there SHOULD be discounts available.

for goodness sakes, why would anyone begrudge a discount to anyone ,after all , since this is a Budget Board aren't we all looking for discounts?

Unfortuately, I don't know of any other teacher discounts other than the Swan/Dolphin and the SeaWorld admission for Fla. teachers, but good luck in your search.

First I want to welcome you, to the teaching profession!! My wife, and myself are both long time teachers 28 years each.

Like many before have said, the S/D Resorts are the only places on Disney property that have a teacher discount. We stayed at the Swan several years back, and found it comfortable. The rooms sizes are average, DBL beds. They are close to both Epcot and Disney Studios by boat. That's a great advantage for us, since we love Epcot and the Studios. One thing though, neither is "Disney themed", if thats important to you.

The teacher resource center at Epcot is long gone. I used it in 86' and found it to be very useful, and full of great resources for all grade levels. I'm sorry to have seen it go.

I'd like to thank all of you for responding to my post. Didn't mean to start any controversy.

Just had to share - I had an interview with the superintendent this morning and I got the job I was hoping for - pending board approval at a meeting (thankfully moved up to) next week. This means I can go to WDW with a clear mind and celebrate big time with my 2 DSs!!!!!!

I've been singing "Zippidee Do Dah" (sp?) all day!!

This year value at ASSp, next year, who knows?

Salaries really differ from state to state. In our school district, a new teacher starts at $28,000. Sadly, my sister in NH has been a teacher for almost 20 years and makes about $35,000. Most people with a college degree make much more than that after 20 years. Most teachers have their jobs for their love of teaching, not the big bucks! We, along with most of the people I know, have to look for bargains.
