Have any of you used this book with your child? How did you and your child like it? Did it work? Are there any other books that you'd recommend instead?

My other kids learned to read with very little instruction. My 5yo might, also, but he doesn't seem as interested as they were (they started reading as soon as they turned 5yo). Jake is more into math. I don't want to push him, though, and would only consider doing the book with him if it's fun and something that he would look forward to doing.

Thanks, T&B

I used this...I homeschool my son..We used this when he was 5 YO. We di 2 lessons a day..We started in Sept and finished in Nov..By the end of that he read at Second grade level..He want from not reading in Sept,to reading Treasure Island by Christmas..It worked great for us..He's the best reader in the house.. When I would test the kids reading levels,he was the most advanced

Hooked on Phonics Worked for Me (or at least our two older dd's)... Have heard of the book you mention but haven't checked it out.

A lot of my homeschooling friends have used that and liked it. We probably will use it, too. (My oldest is 2, so we have a while to decide. ;))

Personally, I don't think I'd push the issue right now if he's not interested. Maybe show him that you have it and leave it out where he can see it. Then wait for him to take the initiative. He's more likely to be an adult who loves to read if you wait until he starts the process on his own.

We are using Joyce Herzog's Scaredy Cat Phonics right now---just for something to work on. We listen to her CD's (the woman can't sing a note, but the "tune"s are catchy and have some basic phonics lessons within them). We are also doing a letter a week....my daughter is still in the sound it out stage, but can't blend the letters....so it is:

h---"h" a----"a" t----"t" what does that spell "dog".

So we are just going to stick with individual letter sounds for now during our letter of the week and continue listening to the CD's and one day it will click. It comes with cards to play games with and such.

Lots of my friends use the 100 easy lessons and like it. It is the recommended format in the curriculum we will be using for Kindergarten.

I have a gift certificate for Amazon and was thinking about buying that book with part of the $ (actually, it's my DH's certificate, you know how that goes... ;) ). I've checked it out from the library before and I read about the technique, which seems good. One thing that I like is that they seem to teach a child to say words normally as opposed to how kids usually say words when they begin to read. S-U-N wouldn't be s-s-s-u-u-n-n-n or even s-u-n-n-n.

The problem with checking it out from the library is that it's a popular book and once my initial 3 week rental was over I couldn't renew it because others were waiting to check it out. It's not expensive to buy, anyway, but wanted to find out some firsthand experience.

Kermit, I agree about not pushing him if he's not willing. The last think I want is for him to not enjoy reading and he may just read a little later than my other children. He missed the school cut-off and is not in kindergarten for his 5th birthday like my other 3 children were (something I'm very glad about) and probably be the time he's in kindergarten he will be reading. The others were early readers. And, it's not a contest.

The other day he started wanted to read some of a book that I was reading to him and I was surprised that it's starting to click. That's what made me think that maybe with a little time every day he could improve a lot.

Thanks for all your help!

This worked well with my DD#2. She was at Grandma's every morning (1/2 day K) and Grandma did it with her on a regular basis. She is an excellent reader. We tried the same thing with DS but he didn't take to it as well We also never did the writing portion as our school does a different style of handwriting (d'nealian) and they were confused enough after preschool when they had to add a tail to most letters.

T&B, you are welcome to mine if you want it. It wasn't what worked best for us but I have several friends who really like it. We like Alphaphonics, but you can't have it! My 5 year old is working through it now.

We love the BOB books too!

PM me if you want the book!

My sister used this as she homeschools 3 boys. All are excellent readers.

We used to homeschool and I used this to teach both my girls...I checked it out of my library 1st too and ended up buying it.
It doesn't suit every learning style, but it worked for us and they are both very good readers. I gave it away years ago or I'd pass it along to you...

That's very sweet of you! Postage is so expensive, though, so by the time that's paid for it would be half bought through Amazon. Maybe there is someone in your area who would want it. Thanks for the offer--that's very nice of you! What is it that you didn't like about it and liked Alphaphonics more?

Overall it seems like a lot of people like the book. Have any of you heard of the series of books by Peggy Kaye? Games for Reading is one of them. I can check most of those books out of the library and probably will. I don't know if they so much teach reading (and the other subject areas) or reinforce it.

Fair enough! You know, I forget about shipping all of the time... Have a good time with your little guy!

Both my brother and me learned to read with BOB books. They are very cute little books. In fact, my mom was in a bookstore the other day and she started to talk to a lady who had a little boy there. My mom reccomended the BOB books to her. I was reading those Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen books when I was in 1st grade. My brother and I are both very good readers and enjoy to read.

The Bob books are cute. I was hoping that our library would have them, but they don't. I'm looking into Amazon and Ebay now for them. A used bookstore might be a good place to check for those.
