Just picked up some of the new Disney Store pins, including one for the 4th of July. This pin is, without a doubt, the worst manufactured pin I have ever seen released by Disney. I had to look through 20 pins before I could find 2 that did not have MAJOR flaws. Even those two weren't that great; the enamel does not fill all the pin areas.

I would have referenced quality control in my topic, but since that topic is taking another direction all together I didn't want to confuse anyone. :D

DH was putting the new state pins in a binder last night and was saying he could tell the quality was not the same as the first state pins.
The Omaha store isn't even putting out the pins yet that others are posting about. They told me they were instructed to wait until the 22nd. Oh well...

It's too bad that more of their pins can't be like their President's Day pin. That has to be the best pin they've done. Did it cost too much to make? It shows that they can do wonderful pins if they want to. Yes, I'll probably get a couple, especially since I'm going to WDW in 13 days, so they may be decent traders. Just sad because I was hoping for a great pin.

I rarely buy pins at DS. I think the quality of pins is much better at WDW. However, I have found a few good ones. The President pin being one of the best.

I bought a couple 4th of July pins today too, but had to search for decent ones. I just don't get it.

At least your store put them out. My husband stopped at a store tonight to pick up a 4th of July pin and was told that they are NOT suppose to be out yet. Doesn't this sound familiar??

I was at three different stores today looking for a few sale items - none of them had the same new pins out. One had no new pins/lanyards & the other two only had a few new items out. None of them had all three lanyards. I really don't like the random put-them-out-whenever policy.

I don't have the time to constantly go & the store closest to me is the worst about having them out. I've tried calling, but unless you get this one manager on the phone (who is a pin collector) nobody else there can tell you beans about what is out, in the back, etc.

Sorry, done complaining.

Just curious -- what are the flaws anyone has seen, so we know what to look for.

DW Lauri picked up one at TDS today. For one, it's too busy! It would be a much nicer pin if the scale were larger and the details didn't blend in. There are unpainted panels on ours which I presume are supposed to be unpainted but they are a bit distracting. The pin feels a bit rough, especially around Goofy's left hand.

OTOH, it's nice to see Goofy wearing a DIS green shirt and Donald wearing DIS green spats. :D

It won't be hard to spot the pin problems. It appears that they didn't bother to put enamel in all the areas, or laid in a thin layer that doesn't fill the impression. It also looks like the pins weren't polished down...the metal ridges seem high and rough.

Believe me, you won't have to look very hard for the imperfections.

Thanks for the warning. I collect patriotic pins and don't get to FL very often so I was really looking forward to being able to get something Americana at TDS. I won't even waste my time going by to pick one up. This is a really big disappointment. :(

Deb,
I agree with you, this is a disappointment. I was looking forward to purchasing this pin when it came out, now I won't even bother.

My TDS called me last night to let me know that they were in. So I headed out there, and knowing that some may look like crap.

Well to my surprise, it was more than SOME... it was MOST of them. I would say that there were 75 pins or so in the bin and I picked out 5 good ones and 8 fair ones. That was it. I was able to educate some of the TDS CM's and guests about how pins are made (thanks Scoop!).

On the other hand, the Declaration of Independence one is very nice.

I agree I think the pin is of very poor quality... A shame too as I like the design.

I'm the last to get the DS stuff, and so I'm just NOW getting the 4th of July pin.

It appears to me that this pin is some sort of "hard" soft enamel that allows for more detail on a smaller pin, much like the DS miniature Mickey American Flag pin. It looks like they tried to do too much with too little. The stars on the flag are just barely raised enough to show, and the enamel just thin enough to let them show. Definitely a cheap appearance, but you get what you pay for. If they sit unsold on the racks, maybe Disney will get the idea that people will pay a little more for a quality pin. But to the average Joe, this is just what a pin should be: a little keepsake memento. Be proud that you are refined pin collector for noticing this. When I got it, I just thought they were going for a mixed look, as they did with the Princesses from the Princess Ball at the Magic Kingdom. They used a thinner enamel on the dress to show off the movement of the fabric, a nice effect on those pins I think. This pin, however, on close inspection, does not look very Proud to be an American.

Okay, so maybe I'm in the minority here.

I like the pin.
Sure, some of them were bad -- so don't buy those.
But the one's that are nice are nice -- a cool picture showing the Spirit of America with 3 of my favorite guys! Maybe a little busy, but it looks like they were trying to be true to the scene. If the pin was too much bigger, it would be too big for the average person to actually wear!

Now, I'm obviously not a pin conneseur (can't even spell it!) so I am not likely to see what y'all are seeing, but that's okay. I'm happy with it!

If you can't afford the $325.00 for the Spirit of America sericel, well, here you go -- a miniture version for only $5.00.

IMHO, of course...

:p

First of all I'm still scratching my head over how these pins ever got past quality control. Even the error or pin variations released by Disney are far superior than this one. The design is wonderful very similar to the America on Parade pin of 1976. I like partriotic pins alot but I would be ashamed to trade this pin to a fellow collector. I bought three in hopes of keeping 1 and trading the other two now it looks I'll be keeping all three. I hope this will not start a trend of low quality Disney Store pins.
