Taxi's at WDW

We have always rented a car for convenience when we go to WDW. This time, there will be 9 of us, too many for a single vehicle (unless we rent a van), and past experience shows not all want to go to the same place all the time.
I am considering using the Magical Express to get us from MCO, and then using a taxi for the occassional trip to Downtown Disney and Dinner here and there. Using the bus transportation is O.K. to go to/from the parks from AKV (where we are staying), but if you have ever used the bus to get from one resort to another (say for dinner), you know the wait is an occassional annoyance.
Has anyone ever used the taxi service? Is it expensive to get from one resort to another? Do I need to bring a car seat for a 2 year old? I figure if it isn't much more than the daily rental rate of a car, I would opt for the cab rides and rely on the bus for most of the transportation.
Thanks for any ideas.....

We use taxi's all the time - from AKL its a little expensive, figure $20 one way (still cheaper for a few trips than renting a car).

I am curious too, thanks for posting! I have seen the taxi vans sitting outside resorts. Does it cost the same for the those as a regular taxi? I was thinking of doing the same thing and we will be traveling with 7 people.

Our September visit we choose to utilize taxi's from AKL to ADR's to save time and also during rainy times. We budgeted $20 for each visit including tip. We got to know some of the cab drivers and they said they have a communication system within the taxis where they say, "last taxi left GF, and one from MK will say they are heading over there". When dropped off at a park for an ADR, the driver would point out where the line of taxi's were waiting and where we could catch one if need be. When we would leave a resort other than ours even, we just asked the valet and they would call for the taxi which was waiting on site. Our longest wait was at 7:15 for an early morning ADR and we waited 3 minutes. Loved it and would not hesitate to use them again. We did not always take them both ways. We took one to CR for breakfast then monorail to Epcot... We took one to YC and then took a boat to Epcot. Transportation was not an issue at AKL for us, buses came regularly. We had tons of ADR's as we were on the platinum plan and did signature dining once or twice a day as well as many tours which sucked up a lot of time.

When we were there in Nov in got a little chilly and it rained a couple of times, so we used taxis to go from AKV to OKW. It cost about $20-22 inc tip, and was very worth it so we wouldn't have to spend all that time waiting at the bus stops. In the evening hours, we found them waiting in front of the hotel, never had to wait for one.

I agree with the above posters. I used taxis in February for Dinner reservations - we had a number which was given to us by SSR front desk and called right from our room and they came and got us from there. I would definitely use them again. The trips were around $20 ea - counting tip. One time a nice CM from the main building took us in a van because he wasn't busy. Nothing like Disney magic!
