Taxi Service at Disney World?

Hey Gang
Just wondering about the Disney taxi service.
I was looking at transportation times to and from the various parks and coming back to our resort looks like it will take a long time.
Can I call for a taxi to pick us up at the parks or is it like New York and it's a free for all? lol
And how much is the average fare? Is it astronomical?

Are you staying on property? If so, use the Disney busses, they're free and the wait time isn't too bad, usually around 15 minutes. There are taxis usually waiting outside bell services at most of the hotels. Prices vary, my guess is around 10 dollars from a resort to WDW. if you're staying on the bay, at the Poly, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, or Grand Floridian, just take the monorail...

We are staying on the property at POR but when I looked at the bus times going from the park to the resort it was about 45 minutes which is a long trip (not including waiting for the bus). After a hot day at the park I thought it might be easier to take a taxi back to the resort. I'd use the bus to get to the park likely.

After a hot day in the parks you might be right. I've never taken a cab, but I'd bet your best opportunity to get one would be by taking a monorail to a resort. With Disney's transportation to/from parks and the airport, I'm not sure you find them sitting at the resorts. Sorry!

Taxi availability when you want it at the parks will be hit or miss. You could call for one to pick you up, but they may pass a fee onto to you for entering the parks. I know that at MK, they do pick up at a special area outside the gate near the TTC, but they would have to enter the gates for the other parks. I remember once hearing someone say that they charged the parking fee to the cab drivers. I've never tried it myself, so I could be wrong.

I'd also encourage you to try the bus transportation. It is really pretty good.
