My son is really puzzled about how many exemptions to claim on his W-4. I told him 0, then modified that to possibly 1.

Does anyone know how much a kid can make and still be claimed on his parents taxes?

Also, I remember getting pretty much all my state and federal tax refunded -- how much can he make before he actually owes taxes on April 15?

I think he has to claim 0. If he claims 1, then he's claiming himself which means you can't.

My DD is works part-time in a small local candy store. Last year she made around $4,000.00. She filed a tax report and so did I claiming her. I got $$ back and so did she. I believe they can make up to $600.00 before they have to file taxes...check the IRS website for more information thou'!
As far as exemptions I told my DD to claim 0, so she'd get it back next year....and believe me...she loved getting that check last winter! (It paid for her car insurance, well most of it!)

I'm 21 so this may be a little different, but I claim 0 exemptions for federal, but I still need to claim 1 (myself) for the state taxes. I dont know if that is the same everywhere or not though.
