Tax return is nearly $3000 LESS because I worked part-time last year!

who's worse off? The rich have been getting richer, the poor have been getting poorer and the government has spent the last 10 years putting everything on the credit card.

I have no problem with those that work hard getting richer..

You want to blame the debt on the wealthy guy thats paying $150K in taxes instead of $250K, I want to blame it on the non-producers that are leaching off society..

No, the socialistic style is EVERYBODY works to the best of their ability. No one gets huge bonuses, no one lives in poverty, and everyone gets food, housing, education and health care. We're not even close.

And that is why socialism is a failure. Everyone will not work to the best of their ability if they know that they will get food, housing, education and health care. Our society is living proof of that. You can bank on that.

Here is a quote recently that I think many of heard and it seems that many in this thread agree:

This is a future in which we will transform our social safety net into a hammock, which lulls able-bodied people into lives of complacency and dependency.

That is the problem with our current system - so many people make no effort to get off welfare and the system does nothing to encourage it. I do think the EIC was designed as an incentive to work but as we can see that even it can backfire. I feel for the OP but this does expose a flaw in the system.

This whole discussion reminds me a my favorite tax analogy:

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good customers, he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

‘I only got a dollar out of the $20,’declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,’ but he got $10!’

‘Yeah, that’s right,’ exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’

‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’

‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

We're not a socialist society.

Yes, we've all seen this one before. but the part of the story that's left out is that is that they all worked for the 10th man who made the most money, yet was too cheap to buy his workers a beer.

No, I'll blame it on the politicians who decided to go to war without a way to pay for it.

Why did he have to buy his employees a beer? Again the idea that the richest should HAVE to pay for others? In this case he was buying the 4 at the bottom a beer....

I will admit that I come from a family at the top. I tend to live in an area with the bosses and I can tell you that the families I know who own and run their own companies are extremely generous. They don't HAVE to be. But they are. Being the boss often means you are the one who works a lot more hours and put your money and families well being on the line.

My dad had a company that failed. He paid his employees each week up until the day he lost his business. He did not take a salary - instead he dipped into his retirement and almost lost his house. I doubt any of his employees knew what he did to try to keep their jobs and pay them.

You really want the government checking to see how you spend your money??? OK, I'm game - maybe we should have checked the spending habits, and credit card bills of the banks and insurance companies we bailed out.

Well if you are asking for government help then they should be allow to see your spending habits. If you can afford to go buy new cameras and to go out to eat then you shouldn't be able to get food stamps. I never said we shouldn't.

Wow...and right back to the heart of the issue, expecting a handout, just because the next guy has more money than you.

And for someone that said that they were illegal immigrants but got taxes back that is not possible. You can't file without social security number.

It is very common for those who are Illegal to have a fake card and file.
So yes, very possible and just as illegal as them being here.

Having a fake card to one that actually works is very different story. If they have one that works for the IRS most likely is someone else that is filling taxes and that won't work.

Well I can tell you its done by me where we have a very high illegal population. I even know someone who purchased a house, let it go into for closer, lived there 2 years rent free and than decided to go back to her "country". All under a fake card.

Not everyone can get a college education, then there would be no one to work at McDonalds or Kohls.

I'm sorry, I might be missing something but why can't everyone get a college education? I know some people might not want one but that is different.

I just have to say, that as far as the EIC, welfare, tax credits, etc, There is always going to be something that SOMEONE is going to take advantage of and abuse the intended purpose. Which is a shame because it ruins it for the group of people it is inteded to help. I am amazed @ the entitlement attidude most of society seems to have. It saddens me that we are becoming a culture that is so busy putting the blame on someone else, we lose focus on what we as an individual need to do to improve our own life and circumstances. I get tired of hearing how "poor me... no matter what I do I can never get ahead..." really? Lots of people do (get ahead that is) They just make CHOICES and accept personal responsibility. Is it easy? not always. is it worth it? YES

now for the record, I agree about having to deceide it if was "worth" it for me to work outside the home vs stay @ home w/ my kids when we choose to start our family. I have no problem w/ someone truly evaluating the costs of working outside the home vs being a stay at home parent.

OP, gosh, I am really sad you came to vent and got this much response.....

I said it somewhere in the middle of all this.....look at your total tax due, not the amount of the refund. You will get your answer from that number how much your tax burden actually changed because of the job.

I haven't read every post, but IMO EIC is stupid! We qualify for it and as a full time student we can certainly use it, but we would get by without it. Of course, in a few more years I will be back in the work force full time (instead of part-time) and we will be paying taxes again. As a member of the "working poor", I am all for a flat tax and less government.

I have worked factory jobs where the "working poor" refuse to pay for (DIRT CHEAP) insurance, but have plenty of money to spend on cigarettes and booze. We as a society make it too easy for people to make poor choices.

Just like the Cash for Clunkers thing - we used it. Someone was going to use that money - it might as well have been us, but it was a stupid decision for the government. Borrowing money to give it away is always a poor choice.

I have to laugh. I just did my taxes. I get the education credit. Where does that one fall in the welfare scale? ;)

ETA: I still show an "Actual Tax Due" amount in my tax program. It is just smaller. :) lol
