I just filled my taxes yesterday, but got a response back that said because I was claimed as a dependent that my refund was denied. Any thought about what I should do?

My first step would be to talk to your parents or older family members and see if any of them put you down as a dependent, and then call the IRS. They're actually really helpful and friendly over there.

I know for a fact my parents put me down as a dependent, because I am a dependent, I am still under their insurance and in there house.

If your parents claimed you as a dependent, you just can't claim your own personal exemption. Did you efile? Was your return not accepted?

I did efile, and they said my return was not accepted because "This taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse has been claimed as a dependent on someone else's return (according to returns the IRS has already received). Make sure that no other person can claim this taxpayer or spouse as a dependent (for example, the parents or grandparents), and that the dependent's Social Security number has not been used on another return as the primary or secondary taxpayer's SSN (the persons listed first and second on the return).

I'm not sure what software product you used, but in turbotax in the "About You" section under "You and Your family" there's a place to indicate that you can be claimed by someone else. Indicating yes should fix the problem for you.

It fixed it, but took away half of my refund.
Maybe your parents would be willing to reimburse you for some of your lost refund, since they are likely getting a bigger refund by claiming you as a dependent. When I was still in college my dad would run the numbers both ways (him claiming me & not claiming me) and would give me the difference in my refund, since he got much more back by claiming me. It can't hurt to talk to them & see if they will "share" a bit.
