DH really only wanted one thing for Christmas

a Tattoo

so that is what i am getting him for Christmas

he has never had one and wants one in Memory of his Dad

he has it all picked out except for where it

will either be his upper arm or his back shoulder area

is either one of them less painful than the other??

he is getting it done thursday night

they said about 3 hours to do the whole thing

he just can't decide where he wants it

any suggestions??

Being able to see his tattoos is very important to my husband, so he won't ever get one on his back.

That may be something to consider.

That is a good point I wonder if DH has thought about that
I will ba sure to mention it

My DH has several. I asked him and he says the upper arm to him is probably the least painful. Basically the more muscle and "padding" in an area, the less painful it will be.

Thanks that is what he was wondering

The more fat and the further away from tendons, the less the pain.

I have a small flower on the inside of my ankle and while it was only a 30 minute process, I squeezed the you-know-what out of my DH's hand, every time they went near the tendons on the inside of the ankle.

Two years later, I'm looking forward to paying $600 and far worse pain, to get the stupid thing removed. :scared:

Definitely the upper arm will be less painful. I got one in memory of my mother on my shoulder blade (left one) and when they hit the bone, it hurt so much that my nose began to run. I also know I wasn't very bony in general at that time (was very much overweight) so it wasn't terrible, but there were some "rough" times. Outlines hurt the most too... so if it is a lot of outlines & intricate work, then it will hurt more too.

Also the upper arm will be a heck of a lot easier to take care of while healing.

however, it will also be much harder to "hide" if he wants to in the future. I like being able to show mine when I want, and hide it if I don't.

Just something else to consider.

I just got one Thursday on my back, the right shoulder blade. I like the fact that I can cover it up if I want or let it show if I wear a tank top. (Mom doesn’t need to know yet) ;) It’s a Celtic Triquetra (trinity) symbol and it’s not too big. The guy said the outline would hurt more than the color, he was right! Mine only took about 20 min. He did say the more “padding” the less it would hurt and also that the upper arm and shoulder blades are good places for a first tattoo.

Keep us updated once he gets his done. I would love to see a pic. I will post mine once it’s done healing. It takes about 2 weeks of keeping it moist with unscented lotion so it will heal properly.

this is close to what he is getting

they are removing the blue circle and putting the words
in a banner that curves under and then over picture

i will post a pic when they are done

Why??????

seriously I want all opinions

DO NOT RECONSIDER

It is his body noone elses!!!!! if he wants a tat let him get 1. I hate nothing more than people who try to bring down others from doing something they want.

I have 4 piercings and some tats also. Others try to say bad things about it, but then I throw it back at them that I would rather be myself than have to force my own beliefs on others, to try and make myself out to be someone more important than I am.

He's an adult who wants to rememeber his father.

DO NOT RECONSIDER!!!!!

With all due respect, I just don't like tattoos. I love my mother and my father, and I miss them everyday of my life now that they are gone, but I would never tattoo any design, including a memorial, to remember them by. On a lighter note; I like what Jimmy Buffet says; "A permanent reminder of a temporary feeling". Of course, that's not the case with your DH's remembrance of hiWWs father, but it doesn't change my opinion.

I had a small tatoo once that I removed myself (when I was "young" ;) ) and never got another one, but I hear a lot of people who have tatoos say it is addicting and once you have one you get more. I think maybe he might want to start on his upper arm.....since this design isn't too big, it looks like it would be nice on his upper arm and then later he could add more around it or put something bigger on his back....good luck :wizard:

It's not because I don't like it. I got my tattoo while I was on my honeymoon, so it has some great memories attached to it.

My only piece of advice is to have him put it somewhere where he can cover it, as others have suggested.

In my line of work, people have to trust me with their largest financial asset and there are a lot of people out there who will judge you based off of something as stupid as a piece of body art. I find myself putting bandaids on it so much, that I actually have a tan line around it in the shape of a rectangle. :confused3

My DH on the other hand, is a firefighter and has one on his shoulder. On him, I love it. It fits him and it fits in with his work environment.

Okay, I have to ask - How did you remove it yourself? It either had to be very painful, or you have some serious laser skills. ;)

I would love to save $600!!!

I'm not a fan of tattoos either, but I can understand the need to find a special way to memorialize his father's passing. If he is set on wanting to do this with a tattoo, my recommendation is to choose one that is very simple and more personal. His dad's name, initials, a symbol, a dove. While the Big Dog is something that presently reminds him, and others, of the whimsical side of his dad, years from now I think he will have wished for something more personal.

I decided to have my husband take a pic even though it's still healing. I posted it on a Tattoo pic thread: Pic of my Tattoo
it still has lotion on it so it looks a little blurry. :teeth:

try to bring another down
i am just trying to get him opionions from all sides

thanks for all the reponses so far :)

I have always wanted one. I don't know where I would put it if I got it though. I would want to be able to cover it if I wanted to and have it show if I wanted it to show.
