Tattletales in the workplace

The principal was discussing an observation with me and said, "It was reported that you told a student to 'shut up' today." We discussed it and I told her I couldn't even think of soemthing that I would have said that would sound similar to it.

After school, the new para and I were chatting about how it went. She is a fourth grade teacher who was on leave after having a baby and hasn't been able to find a job. She was saying that coming from reg ed, she would never think to talk to students the way we talk to them. (Some students I have to be incredibly firm, others, it's all about choices.) She siad, "I would never have thought to tell a student to 'shut up', but it worked." It seemed like the principal had asked her how it was going and the comment was in that vein. She seemed embarassed the principal brought it up at all.

Today was her second day and I thin kthat I'm really going to like working with her. She was saying how she doesn't know how I do it and she can't believe how calm I stay with the kids (which was nice to hear because I feel like the Wicked Witch of the West sometimes). I wonder if it was just a weird first day.

Our office does but our department doesn't. A lot of the office loves to gossip and moan about everyone and everything. There are 3 of us that run the I.T. department and all of us have been friends for years. We all knew each other before working there and we handle everything ourselves. If we feel someone is slacking on a project we tell them, no need to get management involved. We are all adults and can handle things between up, I can't believe others have to turn to children.

The only exception would be if we found someone stealing or something like that. At that point it goes from tattling to reporting a crime.

That's my attitude. But there's a woman where I work who is just sweet as pie, but if anyone makes a mistake or steps over a line, she will "jokingly" point it out to the boss. I guess I don't get that. Worry about yourself and let the boss worry about employees, ya know?

A good boss will recognize that type of employee for what they are.
