Tastykakes!!

So I finished reading the Stephanie Plum books again and really think I need to try one of these tastykakes.:rolleyes1

I understand that they are mainly in the NE. I have a few weekends free with my husband away. I'm thinking I need to roadtrip to NJ to find these wonderous things I've been reading about for so long.

Can I find tastykakes anywhere in NJ? What kinds are there and what's the best flavors? Normally I try to plan something educational or life enriching when my husband is away. I'm thinking because I've never been to NJ this could be a geograph lesson on my way to education lesson about this popular treat.;)

Tastykakes are readily available in NJ. They are a Philadelphia institution. Best varieties are considered to be the butterscotch krimpets and peanut butter kandykakes, to be honest, they are all good!

From the Tastykake website: http://www.tastykake.com/funfacts.aspx

Western PA native here... just visited last month, got my tastycakes and they are not the same :( ... however it did not stop me from eating them and bringing a box home to AL to freeze, lol.

Safeway in Maryland has them, Tina! We never did try them the whole time we were there but the locals loved them.

I live between Baltimore and Wilmington, DE and there are plenty of Tastycakes here. My favorite is Chocolate Junior.

Have you tried the butterscotch krimpets Rita's water ice? It is yummy.

We just moved from Harford County. Boy do I miss Rita's!

I actually have to agree. I loved Tasty Kakes like mad when I lived in Delaware and was SO happy whens someone from here was kind enough to send me some!

Well, about 6 months ago we found Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes at our local Publix and I don't know if it's cause of the distance traveled or what but all 3 boxes we have bought were the DRIEST things ever! And I remember them being so moist and delicious! :confused3

If they get old they get dry. Fresh ones are still moist and tasty like always.

I think it was the removal of transfats. They taste awful, their smaller than they used to be, and the consistency is odd. But then again, so are Hostess items now.

The peanut butter kandy kakes are SOOO good!

I miss Tasty Kakes too!

Those are my favorites too! YUMMMMY!!! I don't buy Tastycakes ever...because I'd eat them all! :lmao: But my DS's middle school band has two basket raffles every year, and one of the baskets is always a Tastycake basket. I think one of the parents works for Tastycake. Anyway, I've won that basket a couple of times! (they freeze well!)

Tastycake has alimit on how far they will ship their product. They like them to be fresh for the customers. I know that you can order them online. I'm not sure if Tastykakes sells them directly from their website but I know there are other sites that do gift baskets and regional specialties sales.

Tina, the local Giants and Safeways usually carry Tastykakes. At least they usually have the Butterscotch Krimpets and the cupcakes and sometimes the tandyTakes. In fact, they were on sale at Safeway last week. And their mini-donuts are still better than Hostess.

But they don't carry my dd's favorite the chocolate Jr locally. We've been known to chase random Tastykake trucks in our pursuit of her favorite snack. (ok, it's the only sweet snack she likes.) So we stock up on them when we go north to visit family.

I have friends who live in NJ and MD and we all get together once a year. They always bring boxes and boxes of TastyKakes for all of us who live in the Midwest.

Never had a Tastycake that I found to actually be tasty. :-/

Get thyself to a Wawa :)

Grew up outside Philly. They're definitely a Philly tradition! Thankfully I can get them at Tops up here! I agree PB Kandy Kakes, & Butterscotch Krimpets!

Funny story: growing up, for our birthdays my Nana used to put candles in the Krimpets :)

I 2nd WAWA, my sister lives in glouster,va and they built a WaWa there and they sell tasteykakes. All Wawa has the sell Hogies too.

ITA... Wawa!! :) Basically anywhere in Eastern PA, you can find Tastycakes. I think most grocery stores have them, it's a law ;) Wawas are much more convenient though.

Now I'm craving a KandyKake. :lmao:

If they get old they get dry. Fresh ones are still moist and tasty like always.

This is good to know! I just found a TON of them at our local Super Target in Winter Garden (5 different varieties!) so I may pick up a box and try them out. I had forgotten how high in calories they are though lol! Hard to fit them in when you're watching your calorie intake :)

Never ever eat food prepared by Wawa. I worked there for 5 years during high school and college. I think I was the only person who actually clean during their shift. The hot dog chili was supposed to only be on the steam table for 24 hours. Sometimes it would stay there for 2 or 3 days. Nobody ever did a deli wipe or cleaned the slicers. I worked in 4 stores over the years.

PB kandycakes (but I saw no PB), butterscotch krimpets, I also like the krimpets with jelly in them, and my DD is addicted to the chocolate cupcakes. :thumbsup2

OMGosh-every year we go to LBI we have to buy tons of butterscotch krimpets. My husband even got the kids into them. That and Toasted Almond ice cream...and Taylor!...and Keltchner's. There's lots of stuff we only eat when we're at the shore.

I like the chocolate cupcakes with vanilla stripe and cream filling. I used to love the candykase but I've become allergic to peanuts.

Love, love, love 'em! But I grew up on them and like anything else, it's nostalgia that moves me more than the taste. They're good but not earth shattering!

You should be able to find them at the store if you're in the DC/VA/MD area. I haven't been in a grocery store yet around here that DOESN'T have tastycakes.
