My boyfriend was born in Scotland and lived there until he was about 6 yrs. His grandparents have passed away and his dad is his only living Scottish relative. We've been trying to figure out his tartan, crest and coat of arms with very little luck from the internet. When we searched, we found 2 different clans that could possibly connect to his last name. I feel like I've gone about as far as I can go as far as google searches online. Long story short, my question is....How do I find out what clan is actually his? His dad doesn't know and his mom told us what she thought it was but we don't believe she did an extensive research. Being in the states makes it hard for us to know how to research this kind of information. This is a little out of my element. Anyone who can help me would be greatly appreciated!!!

How did you find out the 2 possible clans? I only ask because his surname doesnt necessarily have any direct relevance to his clan. It all depends on how far back his surname runs in the family history. When we researched ours we found it changed the further back we got.

Some of my relatives did this a while back and found this website useful.
www.ancestralscotland.com and www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

They were advised to do a family tree using as much information as they could (births, deaths, marriages and where they lived). And to go as far back as possible. You can obtain census records online which can clarify any information.

His surname is Hendry. We just did some online searches and came up with Henderson, McNaughton, and Gunn. Basicly they're clans that have some connection to Hendry. When Chris' parents got married in Scotland, his mom did the research and she says it's Gunn. We're just not so sure how accurate that is so we wanted to find out for sure. Thanks Laurafoster, I'll check out those sites. Thanks to everyone for all their help and anyone else who has any input!
