Target stores are the absolute WORST...

So it's not really a 9-5 job, it is a 9-whenever the people stop calling job?
Doesn't sound like a great way to keep your staff home/work life balance in check.

I say, the hours are posted...it is not the store's fault you are not on time.

I doubt many people stay at work overtime consistently just because someone else's poor planning...
It's a 24/7 job. I can book a room at WDW at 3 AM via a travel agent. Can't do that will CRO. Oh well...

I'm sorry but I don't agree. I love Target. And when a store is closing I think the customers should go to the register to pay for their things. The employees want to go home.

Have to agree 100% when it's time to leave work (even though I don't work at Target) I as employee am ready to go home, why should I have to wait on some inconsiderate person who already knows what time the store closes to finish up, they should have been there earlier! It's inconsiderate to think people should have to give up their off time to accomadate someone elses schedule................geez after working all evening perhaps they too want to go home to their families!

I understand...but it is not a 24/7 job for YOU....unless there are some real labor violations we don't know about.

My company runs 24/7 too...doesn't mean I have to.

Besides, Target is not 24/7, so it is really not the point.

To the original poster, which SuperTarget were you shopping at?
There is one around here that the guy that makes the announcement of closing is hysterical.
AT 9:40 he starts with "the time is now 9:40 and your Orlando SuperTarget will be closing in 20 minutes, please bring your final purchases to the front of the store-

At 9:50 he will say something like there is 10 minutes left and that he will be passing out brooms to anyone that asks (or something like that) and that the store will be closing in 10 minutes

At 10 pm he will announce that the store is now closed and to please check out.

At 10:05 he says "the time is now 10:05 and the store is still closed" I can't remember exactly how he words it, but he says something about grabbing a few cleaning supplies on the way up to the front as he will be handing out the mop in 5 minutes. :lmao: I'm surprised he can say what he says without laughing.

It must work though as several people are hustling to the front at 10 pm!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

When a store like Target is open 14 hours a day-that is plenty of time to shop. The store is not being rude-the customer is. I worked retail and that was the number one pet peeve. Also-in many cases with rotating schedules-the person closing at 10:00 is the one opening at 8 the next morning.

Store sweeps are good for security purposes-we had to get on the store intercom once our areas were clear-as in-"we still have a lady shopping in the shoe department"-annoying? yes---embarassing-yes.

Our store lights were timed to go off at 9:55 to get everyone out-at closing time-all lights went out except for those directly over the registers. Corporate also had the computers timed to automatically shut down at 10:10 to generate sales figures for the day.

Target is not out of line with their closing procedures.

I think the people that are going up and down the aisles at 10:00 are RUDE! They know darn well that Target closes at 10:00 and should be in LINE at the very least. Sheesh.....I wouldn't blame Target for rounding people up at 9:45 and getting them the heck out of there.

totally agree.

I just have too much empathy for my fellow man to expect him or her to stay open past closing for me. I work too and I expect great service during business hours but when it's time to go home...I go home too.

Well.... as a former Asst. Mgr for a Disney Store when it was still owned by Disney, our policy was not to close the store or pressure the guests at all @ closing time to enhance their "experience".... I had nights when closing that the mall would be so obviously closed but guests would be oblivious to the fact.... still, with a smile, my cast members and myself would try to make small "hints" about the fact that it was time to have them leave (as we had to stay and restock the store/clean/vacuum/close out the registers and were usually there an extra hour after closing) We'd shut off the laserdisc player... still... they stayed.... 25-30 min. post "closing time", we'd open the corner where the gate was stored and pull it out 2 feet... only to be met with "Are you guys closing?" :confused3 To top it off, 99% of the time, they wouldn't even buy anything-they were just browsing ( I was salary too so extra time working was not beneficial to me :rolleyes1 ) I now make sure I NEVER do that to anyone in retail having BTDT :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

When you own a retail store like DW and I did, you respect closing times for all retail establishments. The workers do have a life outside the store and we do not wish to keep them from it.

I also worked as a manager at TDS, and this made me laugh!! I can remember pulling in our sign from out front and greeted with, are you closing?

I think it's terribly rude for people to stay after closing and the store should have every right to ask people to leave. There is a polite and curteous way to do that though. It's people like that who think they are about the rules....

I think it is funny that the OP is blaming the store for being rude when she was clearly the rude one in this situation. Why would you think it would be ok to continue to shop 15+ minutes after closing time, making everyone in the store wait for YOU to finish and then they have to go through their closing routine and leave 1/2 hour or more later then they were supposed to?

I used to work at Barnes & Noble, and we closed at 11PM, and that didn't mean we walked out the door at 11:01. We couldn't leave until the cash drawers were balanced, and all the closing reports done, and of course we couldn't close the last register until the last customer checked out. And we had to vaccuum the store, too, which we couldn't do until everyone left (although believe me, I wanted to vaccuum right over the toes of the lingerers!)

While I am all for customer service, it didn't seem right to leave the staff standing by, waiting, after the store's posted closing time, while one or two shoppers idle over their final purchases.

And if passersby saw people still in the store, they'd try to get in and were sometimes not so pleasant about being told "no".

::yes:: , ::yes:: and ::yes::

The store I worked at closed at 9pm. Usually I'd start working right after I got out of school for the day so by 9 I was ready to close up and go home. The managers could not clean out the draws until the customers were gone. Then the employees would have to clean the store, vacuum and put all the items left at the registers away. That takes time. I was in HS and I didn't appreciate getting home after 10 when I had to be up at 5:30 the next morning. If a store gives you warnings that it is approaching closing time then you should finish your shopping and head up to the registers. Stores do this because they are supposed to have every customer out of their store and the doors locked by the time they close.

Your last line reminds me of this older couple once. The store was closed and the last customer was being rung up. And older couple drove up to the store and kept honking their horn. So one employee opened the door slightly and politely told them we were closed. The old man said some really nasty things to the employee and the old lady gave her the one finger salute! No one could believe they acted this way. Even the customer at the register was shocked. And we would get a handful of people everynight saying that just because their watch is 10 min slow that the store should stay open for them. Sorry, no. I'd like to go home too.

i worked at a rag shop for one summer while i was in high school..we were instructed to go through the aisles and let them know we were closed and they had to bring their stuff up or just leave...it wasnt rude, we just had alot to do and wanted toget out of there!

Exactly, these people have lives and jobs outside this store. They should be there to sever you DURING BUSINESS HOURS. To expect them to work extra just to server our impulse needs, would be just plain rude and self-centered.

Just like I always say - everyone should work retail at least once in their lifetime so they can learn to respect the people who work in stores. Anyone that has worked retail knows how rude it is to have customers totally disregard the closing time of a store and expect the entire staff to stay later than scheduled "just for them" because they couldn't shop during the 12+ hours the store WAS open. If you are holding a store up from closing by 20 minutes, you just cost that company an additional 20 minutes of payroll PER EMPLOYEE working closing.

That is really funny but my manager told me to do something similar once. My store would not use the loudspeakers to make announcements, the employees nicely went around and said that you have 10min or whatever left. There was a lady that use to come to my store and was notorious for shopping once we are closed. She never listened so my manager told me to tell her "Maam, we close in 5 min. Please bring your final purchases to the front or you will be helping to clean." :teeth: I have no problem being snarky to a customer that constantly breaks the rules.

Usually we said this to the kids and it got them out of their pretty fast. I guess no one wants to help us clean the store that they made a mess.

I'd have to agree with the majority of posters on this thread....it is rude of the customer to continue shopping when the store is closing. I work in retail and still shake my head whenever I have customers shopping and browsing after the store is closed. Many times all the employees are just sitting around at the front end waiting for the last customer to finish shopping and they are usually the ones that come in to the tore 5 or 10 minutes before closing :furious:

we have announcements made at 30 minutes, 15 minutes and 5 minutes before the closing time, so there is no excuse to have customers still shopping at 9:30. We have one manager that is awesome though.....we had customers shopping around at closing time once and after many attempts by the salespeople to help them find what they were looking for, the manager went right up to them and told them if they had nothing to purchase they would need to leave right then, that the registers would automatically shut down in a couple of minutes :cheer2: they quickly left the store with nothing...they were just browsing and kept us waiting there for quite a while after closing time...now that is rude!

If the OP was the employee of a company that would only get paid until 15 minutes past closing time , she would be the one trying to rush the customer out the door, I don't think she would like to stay and not get paid just to be nice to the customers.
There are other 24 hours stores , I suggest you consider those for your shopping needs next time.

I told DW Lauri about this thread and she said the worst part is they get stuck with these people that will come in 5 minutes til closing, browse until 15 minutes after closing and then LEAVE without buying a single thing!
