I bought an MP3 player at Target the day after Thanksgiving, and I need to return it (got a better one), but cannot, for the life of me, find the receipt for it. Anyone know how their return policy works?

Here is their official return policy.

They've gotten pretty stict lately.

Since you can't find the reciept, did you pay w/ a debit or credit card? If so, they can look up your purchases by swiping your card. I've had them do that often, because I never remember to keep my receipts.

Hope you paid iwth your credit card. That'll speed things up quickly.

herc.

GUH! I can't remember if it was cash or credit. Ugh, I am going to keep digging!!! I hate to be out $50!

I've never had any problem returning anything (within 90 days) without a receipt. But I always pay with a CC. I don't know how it works with cash. It's actually the easiest place to return things. It only takes about 30 seconds.

If they cannot find it on any of your credit cards, they will treat it as "cash." They will give you cash back for the lowest price that the item has *ever* sold for. If it is on clearance now, past a certain number of days, they will not take it back.

I had an item I bought there and I could not find the receipt. I knew I had charged it but didn't know which card. So I handed her my 4 credit cards and she found it in about 30 seconds. If she hadn't found it, it would have been treated as a cash return.

If you paid by check they can also look up to see what you paid. They can find anything except cash.

I had a really bad experience with Target a couple of weeks ago. I had purchased a HP digital camera. I used it one day and it just eats up batteries. I had my receipt stating I could return until Dec. 16th. I had ALL the original packaging and the camera was in brand new condition. They did not want to refund my money. I had to speak to a store manager who wanted to tell me they can't refund my money b/c there is a sign in electronics. I saw no sign in electronics and quite frankly, I don't care if there was a sign b/c nowhere on my receipt or at customer service does it say I can't return a digital camera. I did finally get my refund. I emailed Target to let them know how I was treated. They were very apolgetic and told me since I had the receipt, that I shouldn't have been given a hard time.

I think this information is incorrect.

I have stopped shopping at Target because of their terrible return policy. You HAVE to have a receipt or it must be found on check or CC by computer in order to return anything.
If you don't have a receipt or paid cash, you are out of luck (at least in Colorado)
I absolutely REFUSE to shop at Target due to this ridiculous policy, I hope you find the receipt or used a credit card. Just my .02

Most stores have policies on digital cameras and computer equipment. What's to stop someone from using it for something and then returning it? Would you want the returned item?

In this day and age of theft - why is requiring a receipt considered bad policy? Just keep your receipts in a large manila envelop and then you can return stuff easily.

I recently returned a book to Target. It obviously hadn't even been opened. I didn't have my receipt, and they told me that if I didn't have a receipt and paid with cash, they would let me exchange it for something in the *same* department. Luckily, I had paid with a check so they were able to look it up on the computer, and I got my cash back!

I always pay for everything with my credit card because I just don't carry a lot of cash around with me - plus it's my Disney card so I get points. :teeth: I absolutely love Target because it's so easy to return stuff there. I don't have to keep up with receipts, just hand them my credit card. Mine will even do price adjustments that way too. Was in there shopping the other day and saw that an item I had purchased on Black Friday was even lower now - well outside of their usual 10-day "if it goes on sale, will return the difference" policy. Since I didn't see a big difference in me buying it again and then returning the more expensive one, I asked the employee if they would still do the price adjustment - yup! no problem whatsoever!!

If it's on your credit card or paid with by check, you should have no problem whatsoever.

personally I dont' see the problem of having a receipt as proof you bought something someplace

what if I walked in wanting to return an iPod shuffle?
You can buy those ANYWHERE...what's to say I actually bought it at Target...ya know?

Ugh, I better keep looking. I have all my Christmas recepits in one place, EXCEPT for the one from Target. And usually I am so organized with this!

The reason you have to have a reciept is that people shoplift and then return... So they want cash to be paid to them for something they stole.

I assume that I will not be able to return anyplace without a receipt. (And IMHO Target is much better then WalMart where even if you have a receipt it's highly unlikely the cashier has EVER figured out how to process a refund!)

Yippee!!! I found my receipt!!! It was in my desk drawer at work. Thanks everyone for all your help. I am sooooo happy, because I DID end up paying cash for it!
