Target Disney Entertainment/Gift Cards - most purchased at once?

So I searched and searched for specific posts trying to find the most number of Disney Entertainment cards at Target that someone has purchased at one time... I found lots of people with transactions in the hundreds and maybe one that said $3000 at once, but we needed to pay off our cruise and we had ONE pharmacy rewards coupon (with Red Card debit) with which to do it, to maximize the discount.

So we bit the bullet and went all out, figured we might as well give it a shot - we needed $8000 to pay off the balance on two cabins for our cruise. So I just wanted to share our story in case it's helpful to anyone else out there. :-)

My local Target stores have had tons of these in stock lately (must have caught on to their popularity in the last year - when I bought $500 last year it wiped one store out). So we found the endcap in the back by electronics that had a whole peg full and counted out 160 cards (there were still some left, even).

My sister and I took them up to the counter and set down the pile on the belt, then eyed the clerk to see if he'd say anything. He started scanning, so we started chatting, asking if he'd had many people buying stacks of these cards. He said he'd done a few transactions where someone bought a bunch, but never this many.

Then a supervisor lady of some sort walked by and saw how many and excitedly started chatting about how it's such a great deal to use these to pay off your vacation, and to let her know if we needed any help, etc. Phew.

So we get 'em all rung up and scan the pharmacy rewards card. Off comes 5% from our total. Then my sister swipes her Red debit card and we wait to see if it will go through (she has excellent credit, FYI). She entered her pin, waited some more, then out spits the receipt saying to call the phone number. She calls and is put on hold for 8 minutes, then they come back saying they can't authorize that large of a transaction due to her spending history not showing a pattern of such large transactions like that in the past. They ask to speak to the associate, and the supervisor lady is standing there, so we hand the phone to her. She talks, asks if there are any options like signing up for the Red credit card (then we'd know the limit), but they seem to not be able to give her much info. We also asked if they could tell us the limit on the debit card so we'd know how many we CAN purchase, but they wouldn't/couldn't give anyone that info, either.

By then the head manager Ron is standing there and she hands the phone to him. He talks for a minute, then hangs up. He then looks over our transaction on the computer and starts to say that the Red card 5% doesn't work on gift cards anyway. We both quickly assure him it does, these are entertainment cards, we've done it before, etc., then he does a little test transaction on a terminal to see, and low and behold the Red card does give 5% off. So at least he believes us, phew.

Since he doesn't know how much her debit card will approve the transaction for, he asks for a different method of payment. She hands over her Delta skymiles card, and he manually takes off the 5% (the terminal wouldn't accept a manager-override coupon for $380, but he was able to put in 4 separate coupon amounts and break it up). He ran the transaction with her alternate card (it took forever to print out the receipt, but eventually it came out), and we went on our way, congratulating ourselves.

It was the best possible scenario with being able to use her Skymiles card, (so she got the points for that!!), while still getting the 5% off red card discount (albeit manually), plus the pharmacy rewards!

We were seriously in shock, but as long as you have a cooperative manager, this should be possible!

Also just a heads up, Dreams Unlimited puts a limit on how many gift cards per day you can apply to your balance, so we spent the next couple weeks applying 10 per day to get our accounts paid off.

That is a impressive stack of giftcards!!!

Happy to hear everything worked our so well for you!! :)

I've done a lot, but not THAT a lot :) I think my biggest was about $1500 and I didn't have an issue. My friend who was with me and buying some (same $1500) was not able to do so. Her story was exactly like yours (and others I've read) that luckily and nicely a manager let her use another cc and then manually applied the 5%. I definitely use my Target Red Card more than my friend does so I'm sure this was the reason. I have not been declined yet, but again the $1500 was the highest I did (I think).

I usually get about $100 a week, or every time I'm in Target I grab $100. I have paid off the last two cruises this way so I know every little bit helps!

Congrats!

Ps. - I'm sure you've heard and been told - save all those cards in case there is a refund or cancellation for any reason! I write on the back of each card the date I bought them, the date I applied the payment and for what cruise.

I see you say "entertainment card" not a gift card, can someone explain the difference?
Are these accepted anywhere at Disney? I've never seen them before. how are you getting the 1st 5% discount? i don't have a red card but could sign up if it would help

thanks

Great job! Saved $780 & got Skymiles!

target and a lot of other stores code these cards as Entertainment cards ( they are gift cards). They are accepted at 99% of Disney owned locations, there are a few rare places that don't take Disney gc. she got 5% discount for using red card which gets you 5% savings at target plus she had a coupon from target pharamacy for 5%.

So, to confirm, the little cards you see at check out that we would normally refer to as a gift card - these are the "entertainment cards" you are talking about ... Or are they different from those?

The different wording only has to do with Target's definition of different gift cards in their system.

The Disney cards are what we refer to as a 'Disney gift card' but Target differentiates between their own gift cards and other merchants' gift cards but calling Target gift cards 'gift cards' and other merchants' gift cards 'entertainment cards' if that makes some sense. So if a Target coupon says that it cannot be used on gift cards, that means that it cannot be used on Target gift cards since they are 'gift cards' in their system but it can be used on other gift cards since they are 'entertainment cards' in their system.

Ohhh, I get it! Where do you find the Disney ones? Are they mixed with the regular cards, or only in a separate section of the store? Do they look different? I think I'm going to target tonight now, hahaha.

So, if we signed up for a Target Red Credit card, we would get 10% off our first purchase? would that mean we also get 5% off additionally on gift cards?

I've never really had any use for my Target card in the past, last time I had one and used it was maybe 12 years ago.

Also, is there anyway that they can screw up activation? or is it all done by scanning the card now? I know sometimes they have to swipe the gift card, just curious how it works because trying to catch any mistake later would be horrible.

One more question, can you use Disney Gift Cards to pay for the Dining Plan?

Congrats by the way, nice score with the Skymiles.

It's 5% with the red card, I believe the poster had a pharmacy rewards coupon for add'l 5%. They have to scan the card for it to be activated. I go every payday and get $50, this morning I had paid for my purchases but the GC was still in the the cart I had forgotten to pay for it. So I noticed it and had her ring it up before I left the store.

Everytime we go to Target they ask if we want to sign up for their card, and they always say you get 10% off your first purchase. And we have always said, we were going to wait until we buy something big, like a TV, before we use up the chance to take an extra 10% off. So, my question was that if we sign up for the Red Card, does that promotional 10% off your first purchase apply to merchandise cards, as well as the 5% that Target takes off for merchandise cards...?

I could easily see spending about $2000-2500 to get some cards to pay our annual DVC dues for the rest of this year and next year, plus using the dining plan a couple times. Actually, it's a great deal because where can you get 5% back? No where, right?

No, the 5% they are talking about is the regular redcard discount. The 10% isn't in addition to that (even though the cashier often words it like that) it's IN PLACE of the 5%. We had that argueement when I got a Red Card and expected 15% off my new TV a few years ago.

I personally have only ever seen them in electronics dept. near movies and stuff at my store. usually just hanging on end of row. they are blue and red with mickey on them. They might have some pink princess ones to. basically if you look at back of card will say good at Disneyland, Disney world, Disney cruise. I can take picture of back of one of my cards but mine are from everywhere but target as it's a drive for me.

Gotcha. Thanks!

I didn't know that by using the Target Red card we would save 5% off our purchases each time we shop at Target. Wow.
