Need a reply on a dumb question. I thought that I had read on the boards that one could purchase a $100 Disney gift card at Target in U.S. And get a 5% discount. I was sure that I have read that people do this and use the cards on their vacation. Maybe it was wishful thinking. Anyone hear anything on this? Thanks!

I checked the Dis Budget board. To get the 5% discount, you need a Target REDcard. In Canada these are issued by RBC. I don't know if you can use a REDcard issued in Canada and get the discount in a US Target.

this is exactly what I have been trying to find out today, spoke to every dept in both(5 different numbers) Canada and the states and the answer is no one knows. I applied for a US card but they can't pull Canadian credit reports anymore. I wanted to buy the cards to pay for our whole trip and get the 5% off. I can sign up for a red card in the states but the problem is the cashiers won't scan it for gift cards. Anyone have another experience, a way around it etc?

I can answer this. I did it successfully in December. I got the Cdn Target RBC MasterCard and used it in the States and got the 5% off. Keep in mind there are forex fees.

that's great to know thx, now the other big question is whether we can order them off of the target US site and have them shipped here postage free. I was hoping to avoid the forex charges but at this point its going to happen no matter which credit card I use, so I may as well get the 5% with the rbc card instead of the 1.5% with my travel visa.

No, the free shipping is only within the US. You can only buy 3 cards at a time as well online. Depends how close you are to a border town and if they have a holding service for Cnd's.

Not quite what you were looking for, but it was my understanding that you could use your Canadian-issued card to buy the Disney gift cards in the U.S.

You get the 5 per cent discount, but I believe the forex fees are 2.5 per cent.

I do know I've seen others on these boards who have the U.S.-issued cards. What they do is charge their purchases at the cashier, and then go to customer service to pay off the amount owing.

I did this with Ann Taylor -- they let me put my purchase on the Ann Taylor card, and then automatically pay the credit card via debit.

It's interesting there is no forex fee on the US card but their is on the Canadian card.

There is no forex fee on the US card since there is no exchange happening - you are charged for US purchases in US dollars and pay the card off with US dollars. I have had mine for many years.

Just an aside for those looking to get a US card, there is still no way to pay it off online (I've been told "it's coming" for years) from any Canadian bank. So if you are doing online purchases and not going to the store to pay it off, you will also have to get a US money draft and pay postage. Depending on your bank fees and the amount of gift cards you are getting, this can cut into your 5% quite a bit.

I have the US Target Card and pick up a few Disney Gift Cards every time we cross the border and get the 5% discount. The cards are in denominations of $50 and it is very rare to find $100 cards. This is done intentionally as a nuisance factor to discourage paying for your entire stay using gift cards. Cast Members at Disney don't care how many gift cards you have and will swipe as many cards as you want. We charge everything to the room and periodically go to the front desk and pay the balance off with our gift cards. Pretty easy process now with the Magic Bands to charge.

I find it hard to believe that you can't get a US Target Card anymore. The credit limit was $500. As was mentioned we would buy get the discount and then pay it off before leaving the store.
