We just got back from a cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya and they cruise shoppers were really pushing Tanzanite as an investment. Don't get me wrong it's a really pretty stons, alot like amethyst but is it really worth as much as they were pushing it to be?

No, I do love it..

My jeweller talked us out of it:sad1: ..I really wanted a ring, but he told me how sensitive it was, as well as $$$ I then in turn got an 11 carat blue topaz ring..A la JO. but blue..:)

I don't know about as an investment, but they are pretty to look at. I love purple and amethysts are generally a very fragile stone (soft and chip easily). I know 2 people with tanzanite and diamond rings and I always admire them. I haven't priced it exactly, but just from looking around at various jewelry stores, the price seems to fall in line with other precious gemstones. It doesn't seem to be overly expensive.

I LOVE Tanzanite it is my favorite because it is purple!

I have 2 rings the one my husband bought me in Hawaii is heart shaped with little diamonds around it. I didn't think the price was bad. I don't buy them for the investment but because they are pretty. ;)

oh yes, I got hooked on Tanzanite on my first cruise...back in 2000. I have 3 sets of rings and earrings that match. I love them:love: I thought it was cool that its only found in Tanzania:cool1:

My Sister bought one in Cozumel on our cruise last Sept. She bought a high quality good sized stone set with a few diamonds. (necklace). It was $900 w/o the chain and we have not been able to find anything even close to the quality of her stone here in town when we look...they are always very light color stones for HIGHER than she paid.

I wouldn't buy any stone for investment...but Tanzanite is one of the 3 rarest gem stones in the world. Diamonds are actually not that rare. Tanzanite is not the same as Amethyst...its considered a precious gem.
google it...very interesting stuff.

I have an Alexandrite that my Mom gave me and they are VERY rare too.
She bought it in Hermosillo 40 yrs ago. :hippie:

I have heard that all the Tanzanite mines are filling up with water & it will be harder to mine. Do not know if it is true.

I love tanzanite and have earrings and a gorgeous 1.5 carat ring surrounded by diamonds. I got a really good deal on it, but the stone is pretty fragile although not as fragile as opals.

I wouldn't buy it as an investment, but if it's a stone you like I would definitely buy now because they are increasing in price.

I love purple! - so I have bought a few pieces on cruises and have recieved one ring as a gift. I love the color!:)

DH bought me a sapphire ring for my birthday this year - 'cause he thought I might want something different - I know he meant well, but I really just want Tanzanite!

I like it, but not because it is trendy.

My best friend lived in Africa when she was growing up and went to HS in Tanzania. She has a number of large stones she brought back from there. She made earrings, a pendent and a ring from it them. Her engagement ring is a large tanzanite stone. I think she said something like there are 3 mines for it, and one is closed now (maybe mining accident? I can't remember.) I think she has a few more stones still unset. She had them apprized after getting back to USA. They are good quality stones, but she could of been taken, she bought them some of them on the street market.

She gave me a tanzanite ring for being a bridesmaids in her wedding. She didn't bring the stone back from Africa herself though. She got mine on ebay.

Anyway I like it because it makes me think of her. It is a pretty stone. The darker ones are worth more (mine is rather light, hers are very dark.)

I have been told it is not a wear every day stone. It is rather soft.

I wasn't looking to buy as an investment but that is what the cruise lines were pushing. That if you spent 3,000 today you could buy a condo in 10-15 years because of the mines drying up. I just thought it was a beautiful stone, especially the dark colored ones. Of course I didn't have $3,000 to spend on a stone anyway, LOL! I had budgeted about $400 and the pieces I could have gotten for that were very small. I'm leery of buying something like that on ebay though. I'm thinking of asking DH for a ring for our ann. but am not sure where to look. Heck I guess I could ask for another cruise so we could go to Cozumel and get a ring!

I LOVE Tanzanite, but not as an investment. I just love the stone, especially if it is combined with diamonds and Australian opal.
You cannot find good tanzanite around here. It is so pale and expensive.
I do wear my ring and bracelet everyday, but I did not buy expensive pieces.
My necklace on the other hand....

I discovered Tanzanite on a cruise a few years ago and wanted one but kept putting it off.. DF bought me a necklace last year in Cozumel without the chain and I love it.. That started my fascination with it.. My engagement ring is Tanzanite and diamonds.. DF got me a Tanzanite and pink sapphire ring for Christmas along with a Tanzanite/Diamond tennis bracelet and Tanzanite/diamond necklace for Christmas.. I love each piece..

I also didnt start buying as an investment.. I just love that stone!! I think its a beautiful stone..

BettyAnn where did he buy them in America?

I have a ring. The stone is small, so it's fairly light-colored. My parents bought it for me when I was 16, so they figured I'd lose it, stop wearing it, etc. I didn't....I wore it everyday until I got my engagement ring! I need to get it from there house so it can go into my jewelry rotation. My mom has earrings that are darker. I may ask dad for them because I think mom only wears her diamond studs now (she has dementia-so she doesn't think to wear other stuff).

I bought a few pieces from QVC...yes it's the real thing, I've had it checked! Their prices are way more affordable than local jewelers here.

I love Tanzanite, and have since I first saw it at a jewelry store 8-9 years ago. It is so hard to find the darker stones now, at least in teh stores. I would LOVE to have a nice ring with a darker stone. There is something about it, not quite purple, but not blue either.

Love it!
Got mine about 15 years ago (not on a cruise :rotfl: ).
Not ex*****ve then, IMO
I havde 2 rings and earrings, DD has 2 rings also. She loves them too because the color (or natural ones) is periwinkle.
