If you have one near you, get a spray tan. :) I just don't have the time to sit in the tanning booths for several sessions, plus no matter what they say, they're not good for you. One spray on tan a day or two before you leave is all you need. The one I go to takes all of 30 seconds and costs $25. Just make sure you wear sunscreen every day on the cruise!! My SIL had part of her upper lip removed last year -- skin cancer, not pretty. I put at least a 30 SPF on now and use a moisturizer with a 15 SPF every day.

I am going through that right now!! I have had my upper lip surgically "burned" and operated on three times since 1997 in efforts to remove the pre-cancerous cells. The cancer keeps returning. Now I am going through chemo for two weeks. If it doesn't remove the cancer cells, I, too, will have to have part of my lip removed.

Did your SIL have plastic surgery? Did it work out in the end?

The only thing about the spray-on tan is it does NOT protect you from getting sunburned. If you just want to "look" tan, it is alright. But to prevent burning, you should have a base tan or a lot less sun exposure, even when using sunscreen. I am NOT a big advocate of tanning beds, because I think you can have "too much of a good thing". I do like to use them SPARINGLY before major sun exposure. Just an opinion, though! :flower1:

:( sorry to hear you're going through this. Yes, my SIL had plastic surgery. A friend of the family is a plastic surgeon in NYC and he is fabulous (has done some major celebrities), so her lip looks about as good as it can considering she no longer has that little space at the top, right under the nose.
I wish you the best!! Take care. And everyone PLEASE wear sunscreen!!!

Right..which is why I said everyone should be using a sunscreen...everyday they're in the sun (and not just on vacation!)

I was told about sunscreen containing Parsol 1789 before our cruise, because I burn easily also. I found the Coppertone Sunblock, SPF 45 with Parsol 1789 at Target and it worked great. I still got a tan, but NO sunburn.

If I want to "look" tan, I go to the spray on place...but I will always use sunscreen on myself and my kids from now on. Skin cancer is a serious thing.

I agree spray tans are great but salt water and/or chlorine will make it streak. I know -- it happned to me on my cruise two years ago. :)

tanning whether it be on the beach, or in a tanning booth is not healthy. it's actually burnt skin.

I am very white..lol. Hubby and I start tanning 2-3 months before the cruise. It takes us a good month just to start a good base. We are both getting darker now..we cruise in 2 1/2 weeks.

The one time we didn't tan before a cruise..I got a terrible sun burn on castaway cay. Horrible burn and that was with a good lotion.

First time we did the 7 night..tanned before we left..we did not burn once. It was excellent.
Just make sure whatever salon you go to, get them to explain the beds to you, and a good amount of starting minutes.

I agree that tanning in a "booth" is very bad for you. Do some research and you wouldnt think twice about not doing it.

I went ahead and bought swim shirts for my family. We may look funny, but we are all very fair skinned and I have had too many blister burns on my shoulders. They sell them at Academy sports for $15 and less. Our legs dont seem to burn as much and we can easily put sunscreen on our arms and faces. (and those backs of knees)

I also reccommend a spray on for your scalp, if you are not wearing a hat.
A sunburn on your head is something awful!!
good luck!! :goodvibes

I too was diagnosed with skin cancer last November. Had one spot removed from my forehead and another from my chest. I'll be wearing the spf 15 my doctor recommended. Actually he told me that anything over an spf 15 is just a marketing gimmick. spf 15 is good enough.

No tanning for me anymore. I did buy the Jergens Natural GLow Moisterizer and it works great. Leaving for Daytona Beach in 4 days and will be using that and my sunscreen. If it works then I'll be using the same for our October cruise.

Good Luck to all!! :flower:

Well, I guess I'll be the odd one here and I say that I actually have my own tanning bed. But I'm not the kind of person who tans so much that I look like a piece of wet leather. One reason that I do it is because I am fair skinned and getting in the tanning bed helps me get a base tan so that when I'm out in the sun I don't get burned. We live in GA, and there's no way to aviod the bright sun here. Flame me if you want, but it's my choice!

I am with UGA fan...if I didn't tan I would be burnt to a crisp in the caribbean sun. Burning is much worse for you than tanning. Hubby and I are just to fair skinned not to get a base tan before we are going to be exposed to a lot of sun.

Everyone is different..you have to do what is right for you and your body.

I take blood pressure medicine that makes me more sensitive to the sun, if I use anything less than SPF 30 I burn. I buy the cheapest SPF 45 I can find, usually No Brand. I know there is a lot of debate over how strong an SPF you need....sort of like the debate over how old kids should be when you take them off whole milk and switch to non-fat.......or some now say all kids should ever get is non-fat.

True but fair skinned people are the most likely to get skin cancer. If you continue to tan that way, just make sure you see a dermatologist once a year so they can catch anything that might develope, early!
Good luck!

What I recall from reading up on the SPF debate was not so much "gimmick", but an analysis that there was no incrementally additioanl effective protection gained from any SPF over 15 compared to SPF 15. That said, DW, who is a sucker for marketing, buys 30 so we tend to use 30. One less thing for me to fight with her about, I've save it for something important.

Well debate or not -- all I know is that my dermatologist, who has saved my face and lips from being horribly disfigured by performing remarkable cancer removal surgery, told me to use SPF 30 or above at all times. Now here's something else she told me that I bet people don't realize: Driving in your car every day, sitting by a non-tinted window at work or in your house, or just walking from the car to your house exposes you to just as much sun on a daily basis as sitting on the beach for a day. But nobody ever wears sunscreen or lip balm on a daily basis because they don't think they are in danger. She said for someone like me -- fair skinned who has has several cancer surgeries -- I shouldn't leave my house without sunscreen on all exposed parts of my body. Of course, I don't do it every day, but I do wear an SPF moisterizer and make-up on my face!

You can always pick us out in a crowd on the cruise or at the parks -- we are the palest people out there, but we don't care. We still wear shorts and swimsuits, but not for the intention of getting a tan -- just for comfort. :cool1:

TO THE OP:

I will actually try to answer the question you asked and not debate about whether to go tanning or not - I am sure that is not why you posted....

It depends on what coloring of skin do you have? Fair, Olive , etc... Also, do you tend to tan easy or do you tend to burn?
