Tanning for Disney - Anyone ever do airbrush tanning?

What scares me to death is I am seeing girls in their young teens with metastic melanoma:confused3 Most of them say they tan...I feel like we are going backwards with this. It breaks my heart to see a 14 yr old dying from cancer all because of tanning.

For those of you who advocate the Jergens lotions: Do you find that they smell funny and/or rub off onto your sheets and towels?

I am trying to determine what to do to tan for an upcoming WDW trip and am just stuck. I don't want to use a tanning bed, for common sense reasons listed above, but I really do feel like it is the best and most natural looking tan you can get, with the least amount of trouble. I have used the Mystic Tan, and it was okay, but even when following all their 80 million instructions it still streaked. I haven't tried the airbrushing - how long does that last?

Hoping to hear from the Jergens lovers about the pros and cons. Help convince me! :-)

Jergens does have a smell, but the newer formula they sell now isn't as bad. I never had an issue of it rubbing off onto clothes or sheets

I am very, very pale (red head!!)....so i go from white, to red, back to white! But, I LOVE airbrush tanning!!! I did try the "Mystic Tanning" a couple of times....ehh. Its kind of "live and learn", you figure out which way not to stand after getting no color on a certain spot, you figure how much lotion block to put on your hands so they don't turn orange, etc. etc. But with the airbrush its so easy! I would suggest shaving/exfoliating that morning and going in the evening. I left my bottoms on, but went topless and felt completely comfortable with the woman spraying me. She lets me look in the mirror to see if i want to "go darker" in any certain areas, etc. Because I am so fair, they can customize the tan to look very natural--not too dark, definitely not orange (my skin would clash with my hair!). Don't shower until the next morning. Don't sleep on good sheets that night because you may streak on them while sleeping. And don't be scared when you wake up and see yourself in the mirror! The tanning solution has a dark color in it so the tech can see where its placed, so when your tan starts to develop, it gets darker and darker. As soon as you get into the shower a lot will wash away and you will be left with a healthy glow :)

I keep mine up with Jergens, which I also love. Can't wait to go to prep for my trip!!!

Good Luck!!

Melanoma survivor here - no tan is a 'healthy' tan! I was a teen when the tanning salons started to boom. They advertised them as a safe tan. What we didn't know then could kill me now.

I love the sunblock that comes with a gradual tanning tint to it. Can't remember the brand I used at WDW last year, but it was SPF 30. I put it on every morning. About two hours into touring, I applied an SPF 70 and used that for the rest of the day. Worked great, and I didn't burn or freckle. Only problem was that I couldn't tell if I was getting any real tan, which I wanted to avoid.

The writer of one of the blogs I read swears by tan towels. She worries about skin cancer so won't set foot near a salon, but she swears by these tan towels and says that they work awesome for her! No orange or anything. Just something to consider.

From all that I've read on it, they last about 7-10 days depending on how humid it is where you live or are traveling and if you don't exfoliate after you get it.

I haven't done the Mystic Tan (with the booth) but I did get a spray tan by a certified sprayer at a salong several years ago before a Disney vacation. Mine turned out really well, no streaks or anything. My SIL's on the other hand didn't turn out very well. It was done by the same girl but it just didn't look very good. She is very, very pale and that may have had something to do with it. I noticed very little came off on my towels, clothes or sheets.

If you plan on swimming while on your Disney vacation, it will come off. And when it does, it won't come off evenly. The girl told me that the chlorine would defitely eat away at it and it would look awful after I bathed.

I have also done the Jergens lotion tan and I think I had better results from that and it lasted longer.

I use the Jergins Natural Glow. It gives you a subtle glow over time. Usually after a week you start to see a difference. I'm pale so I just do it to have a little bit of color. I'm not a fan of tanning at all. Yes I think it looks nicer but it is in no way good for your skin.

I think it has a bit of a smell so I use it at night instead of in the morning. This dosn't come off on your clothes either. It's a great lotion and leaves your skin feeling soft.

while I don't advocate using a tanning booth year round or for extended time periods, I did go before summer started as a young woman and I also went for a month before our trip last year.

When I was 12 I had HORRIBLE sun poisioning from a pool party. And yes, I was wearing sunblock most of the day. Same thing happened to me when I was 16, but that was from mowing the lawn.

Now, when I am exposed to the sun for the first time, I break out in a rash. it's horrible and unsightly. I NEVER tan in the natural sun. Therefore, it is my own personal preference to do a couple pre-season sessions in a high pressure unit at our local tanning salon. They are advertised as being 99%UVB free. While that leaves 100% UVA, I at least know that I won't burn...and I never have. When we came home from Disney, I used Coppertone self tanning spray to keep up my tan. That worked wonders. MY DH asked me how I could stay tan for so long!

I use tan towels. I love them! I ordered them frmo QVC and now whenever I see them on sale I pick up a box! I very rarely am orange or streaky.

Same thing here, except mine spent the whole week fading onto my clothes, when I sweated. It looked great, but just kept fading off onto my clothes. When it did all come off, it came off patchy looking. When I did my spray on tan, the tech told me to be sure and exfoliate really well for several days before I came to see her. I did so, but the tan still faded off onto my clothes every time I got hot. Now I use just the Jergens or Hawaaian Tropic self tanner. I like them both. I do still get some fading onto my bra band and straps though when I get hot, no matter what kind of soap/shower gel I use.
