I know, I know, going to these places are not good for your skin. But besides that, I am looking for a good lotion to use. I am not fond of purchasing the lotions there, especially at $30 to $70 a bottle -- outrageous!

Whenever I am outside I use Coppertone and it is wonderful. So I might try that to use, instead of the expensive lotion.

What do you use while tanning at a tanning salon that you find is good that you can find in just plain ol' stores? Thanks! :cheer2:

depending on the salon, you may only be allowed to use products specifically labeled for tanning bed use. Check the fine print at the tanning salon you use. Some places may hold you responsible for damage to the surface of the tanning beds if you aren't using the correct products. I've found good deals on ebay in the past, but the salon I use now offers deals on tanning sessions when you buy their lotions ( check with your salon about this, too :) ), so now I just use what's available in the salon :sunny:

Use ZINC or TITANIUM DIOXIDE. It will reflect most of the rays away from you. That's what I was told after they removed the Melanoma from my face this year. 8 stiches down my face....but I looked good 15 years ago when I was in those tanning beds.

No personal experience, don't want the consequences, but if you feel you need to use, I would use an SPF 50 or higher, with the Z or TD mentioned above, to block as much of the rays as possible.

Yikes! Now I really remember why tanning beds are so bad.

I think it's worth it to just glow in the dark from being so white, like I do! Thanks for the loving reminder MAKmom! :wave2:

Your Welcome Debbie: I'm very white. The last 10 years I've been using self tanners. But the self tanners look better if you have some real tan so I was tanning from the neck down...the wrinkle factor. I figured when I'm old I 'll just wear more cloths...but I can't hide my face. NOW I'm not sure what to do. I've been making alot of changes since the cancer scare. The more I read about the safety of tanners & Cosmetics the more I need to think. This maybe my first WHITE year.

Being from Texas, it is hotter than thunder here! Way too hot to just sit out for a few minutes to get at least a tad bit of color. I almost passed out last year, and that was only about 15-20 minutes from being outside! :rolleyes2

All I really want is just a nice base color. I moisturize like crazy. If anyone tried to give me a hug, I would squirt out of their arms like a prune pit! :goodvibes

Being in healthcare, I hear all of the dangers and do my best to protect myself. So I know visiting a tanning salon a few days a week is not good, but the self-tanning lotions often splotch, streak, or start to wash off unevenly. Nice.

That is why I am at least trying to protect myself as much as possible through the right tanning lotion. Heck, I may just decide to stay white and glow in the dark. At least people can find me real well at night at WDW! tee hee hee :rotfl2:

And thanks to you, Dan, for your input. :thumbsup2

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have been using Loreal Sublime self-tanner in medium dark or dark, and it works great.

I've received NUMEROUS compliments with several people using the word "glow"--as in, "Your skin has such a nice glow to it!" Also, no matter what color shirt I'm wearing, people will tell me "You look so great in yellow!" --or orange, or lavendar, or whatever). It's ALL the self-tanner, because I didn't get these kinds of compliments before I used it.

Loreal Sublime is also the least smelly self-tanner I've ever used. And the secret to getting a non-streaky self-tan is to really rub the lotion in well, even after you think you've already rubbed enough. Keep smoothing it into your skin!

I have very pale Irish skin that doesn't tan at all in the sun, so I never try to get a "real" tan (although I spent my teens and 20s in the sun, sure that if I baked enough, I would eventually get tan--WRONG! :goodvibes ).

Cocoa Beach it got like a Tarzan like dude on the front of the bottle and it shows he's tan, but not his bum :rotfl2: . Works good (when I used to tan, don't anymore though)

Being from the Lone Star State also, I know what you mean. I am fair skinned (aka white). DH is a red head. We both went to the tanning salon to get some color before we hit WDW last time. We did not over do it. However, with that little boost from the salon, we did not become crispy critters at WDW either.

I don't remember which brand it was, but I bought it at Wal-Mart. There were several brands w/ products for the tanning beds. I chose one that came in a spray bottle so I could cover the areas I could not reach (back). They were mixed in the display w/ all the other sunscreens.

You are all the best!

And please, hijack away! If I can get a tan without the sun or a bed, I would love that. I will check out Loreal's Sublime and the others mentioned. Sounds pretty good! :thumbsup2

dbarker: True! I also tanned from a bed a few weeks before my trip to WDW and boy what a difference! I did not burn at all (well, just a tad) compared to the time before when I looked like a lobster! Ouch! :sad2:

Y'all are just too cool! I knew I could count on you!

I second LOREAL' Sublime self tanner! I have an ivory complexion and this stuff gives me just a subtle touch of color. I like it much better than the department store brands I have tried.
If you try a self tanner make sure you exfoliate first, it makes a big difference!

I am totally against tanning beds as a rule; know all the studies etc. I watched the PE teachers I worked with and the beach-goers end up with years-older looking skin and women with 'creepy skin' especially at the neckline by age 40 or so.

Yet last spring when I knew I had to be on the river out west for five long, hot days, with minimal clothing on I did use a tanning bed to tan my arms and legs. We were going to be in 100 degree weather and jumping into the water to cool off all the time. It was either tan somehow or apply suntan lotion every two hours or more often as we paddled our rafts in the whitewater!

My summers with self-tanners have proven that no self- tanner can hold up to harsh, river water day after day. And you can't re-apply self-tanner on sandy beaches etc. while camping!!! Self-tanners wear off unevenly and sometimes even rub off.

Will I use a tanning bed again? NO. Do I recommend them for others? NO. But I had a specific short term use and I knew the risks.

The salon sold and I used a lotion I loved: "Beach Bum Rum" which bronzed and self-tanned slightly. I still use the leftover lotion. (FYI - I'm 50+)

Bad sunworshipper and won't do it again! :3dglasses

This is true-I used to manage a tanning salon. Do not use anything labeled for outdoor use-it WILL damage the equipment and the staff WILL know immediately it was you because they will have a hard time cleaning the unit after you.

Also-if you use SPF you are wasting your time in the tanning bed. Using SPF will defeat the purpose-you will be lucky if you get any color at all. Its not the same as outdoors.
I suggest going to a beauty supply store or even your local drug store-they will have a few products designed for indoor tanning for less than $20 a bottle. This will help you to tan easier and more evenly as well as minimize burning.

Btw, I know you dont want to hear it but self tanner would be much safer for your health. My favorite is Clinique. :sunny:
Good luck!

Oh, but I DO want to hear it! I would love to find a self tanner that doesn't turn my skin orange, streak, or ruin my clothes. Like I have posted before, I am NOT an advocate of tanning beds, I just want a base coat and it is wayyy to hot here in Texas to sit outside for even just a few minutes. And it is embarassing to use a self tanner (even after exfoliating) that streaks, or washes off unevenly. Sometimes I have looked like I had a skin condition! :rotfl2:

Thanks for the Clinique tip! :cheer2: BTY, your tan is gorgeous! Is that from Clinique? It looks awesome!

P. S. I love your fur baby!
