My DD goes to a private school where once a month they can have a free dress day. This is a much welcomed break from their uniforms and a day that the closet is gone through to find the "right" outfit (shes 7 ). They have a code that says no "tank tops". Now I always thought tank tops were the u shaped necks with no sleeves. She was wearing a sleeveless turtle neck shirt (and no it didn't have the large "droopy" armholes). She was told she had to wear her coat all day because it was a "Tank top" now she does have a man for a teacher and I'm wondering if he just may not know the difference. Or am I the one who is confused? Any fashion police out here on the dis?

To me a tank top is sleeveless with a scoop neck. What you described is a sleeveless top, not a tank. Sorry your DD was told otherwise.

I agree with you. No tank tops to me mean strappy type or the u shaped. But a regular sleeveless tee shirt should be OK. I'd certainly be finding out.

First - that teacher was seriously fashion impaired. That was not a tank top by any stretch of the imagination.

Second - why even worry about it in elementary school (ok, a few 5th graders maybe....)

I agree with the others, that isn't a tank top. I can wear sleeveless blouses, sleeveless sweaters to work.

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure before I went to conferences tonight that I wasn't the only one thinking this way. I'll be nice I promise!!

I agree that that's a sleeveless shirt. I think that it would be completely acceptable if they wanted to state in the rules that no sleeveless tops are allowed to prevent people from wearing sleeveless shirts and tank tops, but that should be in the rules if that's what they mean. And if a 7-year-old breaks the rule, she should probably just be told not to wear that again. It's not like she was revealing anything, since she's 7 and since it was a turtle neck.

If the cloth over the top of the shoulder is at least as wide as the armpit below and the neck and arm holes are not much larger than neck and arms, then the shirt or blouse should pass as not being a tank top.

Many years ago I heard a discussion on the radio of school dress codes. One parent was saying she denied a child's going to school wearing a tank top and boxer shorts saying that "my daughter does not go to school wearing only men's underwear".

Is it such a big deal that you have to discuss it at teacher conference tonight? Boy, am I glad I am not a teacher, if that's the kind of stuff they have to deal with! Wow!

At my DD school they cannot wear tank tops or sleeveless shirts. They do not wear uniforms but they do have a strict dress code. I know that even with our school programs they girls are not allowed to wear sleeveless dresses.

you must be having great weather if it's actually nice enough to wear a sleeveless shirt!
I wear shortsleeves at work while my co-workers are still wearing longsleeve & sweaters!

My kids also go to a small private school and its just crazy sometimes how old school they are about certain things. It takes a parent really getting involved to change these things sometimes. Private schools are always begging for parent involvment anyway!;)

Sorry you think asking for clarifaction on a dress code seems wrong to you. This is our first year in a private school and the weather is starting to warm up a bit and DD has outgrown almost everything she owns so before going out and buying her things she can't wear I did use the conference forum to have the code clarified. They also have a no jewlery clause that I wasn't aware of. She had mentioned it once but I couldn't find it in the guidelines. I asked about the jewerly because her daddy wants to get her something special to remember him by when he leaves for Afganistan in the next few months. When I asked the teacher about it he blushed and said that he admits to not knowing much about "girls fashion"(if was rather cute) and said he would check to see if it was a tank top or sleeveless policy. Seems even he isn't quite sure. Oh yeah.....shes' doing GREAT in school!!! She can READ!!! and SPELL!!! and gets along great with others!!! :bounce:
Moving her to this school was the BEST choice we could have made for her!! We'll figure out what to wear on free dress day yet!!!!

You really have my curiosity up? What is a no jewelry clause and even more curious its purpose please?

For goodness sake if daddy wants to get her a locket or something similar to wear while he is gone why in the world wouldn't they let her wear that?

No jewelry at all or just nothing that is outside certain parameters?

Deb

No jewerly at all. No yellow ribbon pins, no cross, no heart. Its so that the girls (and the boys) don't get caught up in "fashion" this is a small Christian school and these are the guidelines they have established. I'll have to deal I guess. He didn't say anything about something being attached to her backpack!!! LOL
