I think I have finally convinced my group to try Tangierine (I have been wanting to for years). Now, my older DD loves gyros, so my question is, are the shawarma sandwiches similar to gyros. Also, what is tabbouleh?

With the proviso that I'm not middle Eastern, Shwarmas are the same as gyros. I think the Greek name is gyro. I've had shwarmas in the Latin Quarter in Paris and they are gyros. But, when folks were posting pictures of food on the DIS, I noticed that the shwarmas are not served in pitas! I can't believe it...it looks like they're just on a bun. Is that authentic in any part of the world?

Oh no, not a bun! The pita is part of what makes that sandwich so good. Anybody know for sure if it is a pita type bread or a bun?

I just happen to have some Trader Joe's Tabbouleh in my refrigerator. They refer to it as "Traditional Middle Eastern Salad". It's a tasty mixture of tomato, parsley and bulgar (cracked wheat), etc. Here is the full list of ingredients: Tomato, Parsley, Bulgar (cracked wheat), Onion, Soybean/Olive oil blend, Citric acid, Salt, Mint, Water.

Rather than eat it on its own, I like to make a hummus and tabbouleh sandwich on whole wheat pita bread. Or put some hummus and some tabbouleh on a plate and scoop up a little of each with pita triangles. The combination of textures and flavors is yummy!

We recently dined there on our last visit. Have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Food was very tasty. I had the chicken shwarma plate, DH had the lamb. Both were very good. Our plate came with morroccan bread, which was more like a roll. The tabbouleh was very good too. Desserts were okay as well. Had some sort of kiwi strawberry pastry and some sort of tangerine pastry.

What?!? No Xanthum Gum? The nerve!
:teeth:

Woohoo, xanthan gum, that's my specialty. ;) Just finished a project in my food product development class concerning xanthan gum.

I've never had the shawarma sandwiches at the Tangierine Cafe, but I do believe they are on the whole wheat (or not whole wheat anymore?) bread, not a pita. I don't think they have any pitas to speak of there, unfortunately.

Well, it still sounds really good even it isn't pita. I'm hoping they all agree to give it a try this time! Thanks.

Everyone is making me so hungry! It's that "late afternoon at the office" lull. I could really use some humus and a pita!
