Talk me into a Wii U

Ds 10 is asking for a Wii U for Christmas. I am not convinced he will play it often enough to get our money's worth. He doesn't get much time to play video games, and when he does, he usually plays Minecraft on the PC. We have a Wii already that no one has touched in months. I am not sure why he wants a Wii U other than his friend has one.

Do you have one? Do you like it? Do you feel like it is significantly different than the Wii?

Thanks!

DS 11 tried to talk me into it. IMHO the system will be dead in short order. External game developers will not make games for this systems. Might not be a big deal if mario games is all your DD wants to play but for my DS I can see the XBOX played daily while the current WII sits there. Ask him recently and he hasn't touched it in months. I'm waiting for either PS4 or XBOX1 to work out the kinks before getting a new system

I'd try and figure out what games he is interested in.

My son is only 5, but the games he is most interested in are for the Wii U so that's what I got...I mean, that's what Santa is bringing.

Can he play (online) with friends that have a WiiU? If so that may be why. I know my dses play with their friends on our Xbox.

I don't know anything about the WiiU except that it is backwords compatible so at least you are still able to play games that you've purchased before.

We've given up on the WiiU at our house. We bought two of them from Target over the Summer and both of them had issues right out of the box. The first one, we called Target and they told us to bring it in and exchange it. DH was on the phone with Nintendo customer support for over two hours and their best solution on the second console was that we send it in for repair in a prepaid mailing box that they would send (turnaround time approx. 3-6 weeks). We called Target and they told us to bring it back and they would give us a refund. Unfortunately, we'd already bought (and opened) a Super Mario Brothers game and an extra controller, but we figured that was a small loss compared to the $349 we'd spent on the console. Perhaps if the price drops down to $99 in a year or two we'll give it another try, but we're not willing to risk $300 on it again.

I wouldn't get it. I agree, the problem is there just aren't a lot of good games available for it. The only one of note so far is Super Mario 3D World, and it's a waste of money to buy the console to play one game.

If you like to play Nintendo games, the Wii U is obviously the only system you can get them on. For family friendly games, there just aren't as many options on PS and Xbox.

If your child is going to be into more mature first person shooters and gritty role playing games, then a PS4 or Xbox will serve you better.
