I'm looking for a backpack to use when traveling. I haven't used a backpack in forever! I'm looking for functional and hopefully fashionable.

Will also need to double as a diaper bag, I have one daughter 17 months. Hoping to use his bag on a Cali trip where I will be flying alone.

Any suggestions? Any bags you love?

I actually went to many stores and looked for the lightest one I could find that still had padded straps. Now I have one from target (just a random one) but I used a Vera Bradley backpack for years as a diaper bag until I spilled cough syrup in it. No amount of washing to get that smell out.

I got a High Sierra Riprap backpack this summer for my middle child, but it was way too big for her so I stole it. I love it, it is a decent size but not too huge, comfy and it can totally hold diaper bag stuff plus other stuff. I have used it for at least 2 or 3 round trip plane trips when I was solo with all 3 of my minions with no issues at all.

We bought one from Eddie Bauer specifically for a diaper bag...lots of pockets and made well. We love it!

I highly recommend the LLBean deluxe plus school backpack. It's highly functional (tons of pockets, zippers etc.) and will hold up beautifully. They also replace/fix if anything on it breaks. It's not fashionable though.

I was looking at this one... Is it big enough is my main concern and will it hold up...
I think it's plenty big. I think it's slightly smaller than a regular size backpack, but there's enough room for so much stuff!! It's coated in Teflon, so very durable and stain resistant. I love it!

if you have an outdoor store near by check them out or I would recommend, REI. this is a great place with people who use their products. I have several of their packs from small to large. I would suggest set your minimal size, then go next size up. I have a "halfdome"- padded straps, extra pockets and is med/small pack, able to carry more stuff that i want. But for kids this means, extra cloths, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, toys...... Also are you going with a stroller, will it fit underneath?

Then I have a summer pack "flash 22" this is a small pack, minimal carry pack with mesh should traps, great for helping you stay cool. We would normally have just rainjackets and snacks in this pack, maybe 2 bottles of water. This is not suitable for dls large cameras, but could be used for kid/diaper pack, just cant bring kitchen sink.

My backpack was free, and I used it earlier this year to haul all sorts of misc. items. It had side pockets for bottled water, and snacks. I was able to carry diapers, wipes, a baby bottle, princess dress (ziplock bag) spare shirt and pants (ziplock bags are your friend) and misc toys.

I love our Vera Bradley backpack for an every day diaper bag, but we don't use it while traveling. It just doesn't carry as much. So, while not as fashionable, we use an REI hiking backpack as our day pack/diaper bag while traveling - especially in planes and at Disney. The hiking backpack is a little bit narrower, though it holds more than the Vera, which helps it fit under the seat on an airplane, or on a ride with us at our feet at Disney

Look at the weight of a backpack before buying it! They vary a LOT! Light is better.

Me - LL Bean bookbag - I think it's the same one someone else mentions above. It takes abuse well.

I got it in black. Fashionable? Not really, but I did buy it in black so it's neutral.

Too many pockets slows you down at bag check.....

I know this probably doesn't fall into the "cute" category, but I used this Ambi Sling Bag by Condor to carry *literally* everything during the summer on our last trip. I had everything from baby supplies to our DSLR camera to snacks, extra clothes for the kids, first aid kit....everything. I liked I could swing it around while still walking and get what I needed out of the bag without having to take it off.

Thank you everyone! I do have an REI close to me so I think I'll go check that out. I wish k had thought of this when I was at the LL Bean store in Maine this past summer! We did pick up a backpack but it was for my daughter and not quite the size I would need.

I never thought about the pockets slowing down bag check, so I will be keeping that in mind for sure!

Fashion while important will lose out to function on this one that for sure! But chances are on the parks I'll leave it under the stroller anyway.
