I seriously doubt he was actually shooting with the cars right there next to him.
He was probably getting shots of the cars coming out of a corner a little ways back.

Do you think the AF thru a 500mm (or whatever it is) at a distance of 20 feet is as fast as a car in a 100mph corner? MAybe servo mode with a car battery!

Imagane the track grit getting whipped up and hitting that lens. Good place for a disposable $100-200 UV or PF.
