Our usual local airport transport company is MIA and there are terrible reviews for many of the taxi services. Has anyone taken an uberxl to JFK (or your local airport)? There's 3 of us plus checked baggage & carry-ons. I figure the xl would be appropriate cause of the luggage, but are they usually reliable, and is there a price surge about 5AM?

People’s experiences at THEIR local airport will likely be no help, as no other market is like NYC (that’s where I assume you live). The best thing to do is fire up the app one morning at 5 a.m. and see what’s out there. It won’t be 100% applicable, but a fairly decent representation of what you could expect on your travel day.

Honestly the UberXL prices are very similar to booking a car service. I was the transportation coordinator for a number of pop culture conventions and we used car service as well as Uber vouchers for some of our guests. I booked quite a few cars in NYC. UberXL was very similar in pricing to a reasonable car service SUV. If I remember correctly it was maybe $20ish cheaper depending on location. To me I'd rather spend a bit more and book a reputable car service and not have to stress about the rest. Of course car service companies charge various rates and you'll have to research to find rates/reviews. Heck, my rates could vary by as much as $100 depending on which car service I would use.

We usually use Carmel or Dial 7 to JFK, LGA, or EWR because I like to be sure I will have a car available and one that can hold all our luggage. Both of these companies have always picked us the agreed-upon time. The car service may be a little more money, but usually not much because of surge pricing.

I know where I live (about 25 miles south of WDW) Uber and Lyft do not have ANY cars early in the AM.

We have a small airport, and a driver once told me that they do a lot of business getting people to the airport for the first flight out each day.

Where do you live? I might be able to recommend some companies in the New York area. Look into EmpireCLS for starters. They're the biggest one around.

When we last traveled from LGA to home (Riverdale) it cost $34.60. That was 6/15/19, 5:18 AM. No idea if that was an UBER XL or regular UBER. We had 3 carryons and they all fit in the trunk.

Gives you a ball park figure but @FCDub gave the best advice for current pricing: just download the app and check the price around 5:00 AM.

So, just to follow up we did end up using Uberxl. When we first started checking, it said no cars available. After about 25 min and a mini heart attack later, we were able to grab one. It was an Escalade and cost about 28 plus a well-deserved 25% tip. It was a short ride- Coming from LI to JFK. Our old car service was a shared van for 40 each way, so this was a better price 2 years later.

Aren't there any of those 'park & fly' type places near JFK? Every airport I have flown out of seems to have them. The roundtrip cost of whatever car service you pick is probably similar to the parking charge when using your own car. Using your own car means it is always ready to go and you don't have to stress out over finding an available on-line taxi the date/time you want to depart and can pack your own car the night before the trip for an early departure.

Long term parking at JFK costs about $125.00 per week. Not sure if that’s before taxes or not. Depending on length of stay it can be cheaper to car service.

Usually the offsite airport parking is cheaper then parking at the airport. Park & Fly places all have shuttle buses to drop you right at the terminal and eliminate the need to drag your luggage through the parking areas.

Our uber drivers kept canceling on us and we almost missed our plane.... so we now take our car and park in one of those off site parking lots to the airport. It ended costing about the same for us.

I also considered a van company that thats all they do vs a independent contractor.

Prebooked Lyft few days before and although the first driver cancelled they still got us during the 15 min window they gave. Was very happy with is and will be using that from now on
