Taking the kids out of school...

We have never had a problem pulling DS out of school for vacation, until this year. He's in 5th grade this year and has a lot more homework than in the past...the school will not give out the work ahead of time so it would be all make up work...all that on top of the normal work when we return is too much pressure to put on him, so now we are trying to plan our trips around school breaks. When they're younger it is so much easier to pull them from school...problem is they grow up too fast!

I teach high school special education students (Mentally ********) and if one of my students had the nerve to tell me that there negligent, thoughtless, impractical parents were taking them away from imperative learning time to go on some dim-witted Disney trip I would immediately......

1. Be angry because I couldn't go!!!!!

2. Tell them to make sure to tell Mickey I'll see them this summer!!

3. Hope they have a wonderful vacation because so many of my students NEVER get to see a magical vacation like Disney!!!!!:hyper:

Thought I was gonna be negative didn't ya!!!!!!:sunny: The adjectives above were only used for dramatic purposes. Its only a week, it could be made up!!! Its not like she'll be missing finals!! - Even finals can be made up if the instructors know up front and arrangement are made at a reasonable time (please send Teacher at least 1 - 2 weeks notice in advance). If the teacher has a attitude - trust me, she's just jealous :p

I love Disney, and I've shared all my vacation videos and pictures with my students, I really do hope all of them get to experience Disney themselves!!!!!:teeth:

Today I hand delivered the notes to the teachers informing them that my boys would miss the only 2 days of school during MLK week. DS1's teacher asked where we were going. I timidly told her Disney World. She smiled & asked if she could join us. DS2's teacher's response was that so many children will be out those two days that the entire week is a waste. (She wasn't blasting decision - she was venting about the school calendar.)
I am hoping that this means minimal make-up work.

We have always gone during summer break, but I don't think it's a big deal for elementary school aged kids to miss a week or so of school to go to Disney World. My 2nd grader has missed a few days here and there for hockey tournaments and his teacher always let's him make up the work. However when we have gone to the travel tournaments and my older son, who's in middles school now, has gone with us we do have to send a note to school saying he was sick in order for it to be an excused absence. I don't like having to do that, but if the absence is unexcused he gets zeros on missed work. I wouldn't allow either of them to miss any school for such things if they weren't both very good students and capable of making up the assignments quickly.

I never have before but i will be for our Dec 2004 trip, i am going to get all the class work from the teacher and they can still have study time.

Just a PS to my earlier post. My DS was out for a week this past quarter, and his grades went UP. Talked with his teachers yesterday and he has the best grades he has had all year. So WDW must be good for the kids.;) .

We always took our girls out of school for a WDW trips, every other year for years. We always had understanding teachers that worked with us on it. We also went because of a business trip, so they were more understanding. Now our oldest is in 5th grade and there's just no way with her work load that we could do that. The stress of "catching up" afterwards would put a damper on a vacation. So, to answer your question, I think family vacations are so important and if the kids can do it without getting too far behind, pull them. If not, then go during the busy times, like we must do now.
