Taking Squash to America?!

We went to super market & did not see any orange squash, what do there kids drink !!!

Hi Lorna,

They drink fizzy drinks over there mostly, the market isn't big on soft cordial type drinks.
If you look for some of the brands I mentioned earlier they are generally available in all Publix supermarkets.

The 'ethnic aisle' that stocks the likes of PG Tips, Cadbury's chocolate and Robinson's squash can be hard to find as it comprises mainly of just a few shelves full of groceries.

There is also a small Grocery store at Old Town in Kissimmee, that just sells purely UK goods - naturally more expensive though.

We looked in Publix couldn't see it, but now know why its ethnic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they have cool aid, which is a powder that you add to water, the kids liked it, but you should have seen the staining on the jug we made it up in, i seen it in grape and cherry. infact i brought the sachets home lol as after we found the robinsons kids diddnt want the cool aid lol

He drinks fizzy all day in the parks, but when we are in the room he likes some squash for a change. We are going to be away for three weeks and thats a long time to live on fizzy rubbish, as he doesn't enjoy plain water.

We always take ours too, 2-3 bottles, never had a problem . I know what you mean squash is more thirst quenching than fizzy all day. Also take my own teabags-nothing beats Yorkshire tea.

Toying with the idea of buying toiltries out there next year, as we're staying in a villa for the 1st time and plan to go shopping on our 1st evening (which we don't normally do) Have to take my 'Colgate' though - that's another thing I can't substitute for anything else!

This reminds me of the first time we visited Florida wayyy back in 1980.
When we arrived at Customs and Immigration, the man in front of us was asked the usual questions - do you have plants, meat, dairy, etc. We were surprised when he answered yes, but even more shocked when he removed said items from his bag. He had several bottles of milk with him! :scared1: :rotfl2: :scared1: Now remember, this was 1980, so the bottles were GLASS!

All these years later, and I can still remember the Customs guy's deadpan expression when he asked "Don't you know we have cows in the US, sir?" :rotfl:

I, too would be afraid of spoiling our clothes if anything liquid leaked out or even worse, burst! :scared: For the couple $ expense, I would just buy squash when I got there. ;)

Forgot to mention that we have also managed to get British groceries at King's Supermarket on I-Drive. Our last time visiting there (October 2006), their "ethnic" stock had definately increased from the couple of years previous. :thumbsup2

When we were there Wal mart and Publix both had Robinsons, - also they had quart cartons of "juice drink" which are just strong squash anyhow - we watered them down for the kids, but we all mainly drank water anyway. I'd be worried about leakage - some of those suitcases come out on the carousel looking a bit worse for wear sometimes:eek:

I posted a question about what drinks were available at WDW on the US side of this site some months ago because my DS's do not like fizzy drinks and only drink juice and squash. The replies I got suggested as a PP said that squash was not as readily available there as here and the majority of people answering my post suggested that it might be easier to bring a bottle with me.

I would recommend just making sure it is well wrapped in a seperate bag etc and placed in the middle of a suitcase so it wont explode!:scared1:

Have a great holiday :cool1:

I think we bought ours from Walmart - I think it's about $4 a bottle.

Despite the startling colours, Gatorade and Powerade are pre-mixed squash drinks. Both come in orange varieties and the supermarkets stock them in huge sizes. Powerade is readily available in individual sizes at WDW, so if your hubby fancies something other than fizz when he's at the parks, he could give it a whirl.

We took two bottles of Robinsons with us on our last trip. We taped up the cap wrapped them with carrier bags and taped those aswell. No problems at all. The only problem we did have was with customs. They put the suitcases through their x ray machines and apparently the bottles show up as organic which prompted a full search of the cases. It also took us a little while to explain what squash was so it might be an idea to have the labels on display.

My Dad travels to us about 4 times and year and brings be all sorts of treats including Beer in glass bottles.... He packs them VERY well in bubble wrap and plastic bags and has no problems. His case even got lost this year and actually went to China (yes its a joke in our house) and the beer was fine 3 weeks later when it got lost again on its way back to England. So as long as you pack well you should be fine:)

You can get many many different packets of power drinks to add to water to give you something different to try if you wanted to go that way, from Iced Tea mix, lemonade, to all kinds of juice.

On a side note we were in England last year for 3 weeks and when we returned my husband and I realised we drank nothing but beer and tea for the first week. I had to go and buy water, soda and juice. I actually don't give my kids squash...sorry

We like our juice but l think these are minging ;) ;) ;)

Have to say this thread has me amused, on our first trip we packed everything (granted we have 4 children, 1 who is autistic and 1 at the time was 15 weeks) I packed nappies (2 kiddies in nappies) wetwipes, swim nappies, baby milk (would till pack this as they dont have the same formulas) washing powder, comfort, toiletries, food stuffs etc. As if they didnt stock anything in the US or sell alternatives :rotfl2:
Now the only thing I take are nappies and wipes for first day or 2 and washing powder as my autistic son reacted to the bleach in US ones. We now bring more food back, on average 4 -6 huge jars of grape jelly, sweets etc.
Sometimes taking one or two things that you like doesnt hurt anyone and can act as a security buffer, atleast you wont have to run out and buy it.

What exactly is squash? If by fizzys you mean sodas or pop , I understand that one.

Our kids and grands like to drink crystal lite(no calories) it is a flavored powder you can add to water, also gatorade, its a sports drink that replaces electrolites in your body. sunny D is simmilar to orange juice, and many different kinds of other juice boxes.

The newest thing are these power drinks or energy drinks, they are nasty but all the kids want them:rotfl2:

I had to think for a minute as well about this 'squash'. The only squash I know about is a yellow veggie. :)

It's just a way of flavouring a drink to make it taste fruity. But it's nothing special and is sold liberally in Orlando.

It's a concentrated, still fruit juice that is added to water (around 1 part juice, 5 parts water).

Thanks to the OP. I never thought of it before, but i'm gonna take some with us in April for my kid. The less fizzy stuff he drinks the better :thumbsup2
