Taking Squash to America?!

Hi all,

Probably a dumb question . . . my DH can't live without orange squash and we have real trouble tracking it down in Florida (ending up paying $7 in Walgreens for a small bottle of Robinsons last year out of desperation!). I know we are not allowed to take food into the US, but does anyone know if a bottle of sealed squash in the suitcase would be OK?!

And yes, I am worried about it leaking!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you can take it in your suitcase.We will be doing the same with Dd3's juice-only Asda's strawberry juice for her.x.

Thanks for your comment . . . he can, but why should he if there is no problem with us taking it with us?! He doesn't like just water, and fizz gets a bit dull after a while.

i do this for my dd on every trip i just wrap a towel around the bottle and put it in a carrier bag ( just in case ) but it has allways been fine.

because i'd hate it to get all over my suitcase if i didn't HAVE to carry it (as might be the case if it was for an autistic child who will really have a problem if he doesn't have something he's used to)..

i've seen lots of things explode all over suitcases...

if you have to take it, you could pack it in a separate bag..

or if you take an emtpy squishy suitcase to fill with your purchases, then wrap the juice in a million plastic bags, then pack it in the empty case and then pack the empty duffel (now with the juice in it) into your suitcase...
that way, if it leaks, it will be enclosed in the bags and the case...

i used to pack an entire carton of food with us when the kids were toddlers and we stayed in a place that had a kitchen so that i could cook what they were used to...(and it was cheaper that way)..

i put everything into a regular mover's cardboard box (a size that was permitted by the airline)....it had only food in it...nothing else...
so if the food got out, it only got out on other food...

if its any help at all, not long back and i got a bottle of robinsons orange squash for $4.99 from a local store on i drive, there were severl that had them,. yes more expensive than here but i dont like the kids to have too much fizzy stuff and the cool aid was a bit yucky after a while.

Joshua as you all know is autistic and loves his vimto, orange squash or apple and blackcurrant equivelant - he doesn't drink any fizzy drinks at all.

We have never taken our own.

Publix do stock Robinson's - true you pay more, but for me that's still the easier option.
With the likes of Gatorade, Nestle 'juicy juice', Ocean Spray and Tropicana you will find these readily available, though strangely enough the range for squash type drinks is much larger in the UK than over there.

To be honest for an extra couple of $$$ surely buying out there is easier and sorry for being blunt but your husband can't drink anything else such as Orange juice?

I agree that spending the extra few dollars when over their is no big deal if there is something that you absolutly have to have - although I would think that 2 weeks isn't a long time to have to 'do without' so to speak. We've got to the point now where we dont even bother taking toiletries, sun cream etc with us. We just buy from walmart, walgreens or publix and throw what we dont use before we come back.
I remember it always made us laugh the first time we went to Publix and saw Robinsons juices in the Ethnic aisle, along with other favourites that we assumed would be readily available in the US.
If I was taking something like a bottle of juice with me I would probably wrap it in bubble wrap, or towels, but I think you would be very unlucky if it got broke and leaked over everything anyway.

ive taken squash abroad loads of times, when the kids were small. as long as its allowed into the US(and we have established thats the case) then you can take what you like !!!

No, he likes squash!!! I'm so surprised so many people are commenting on it, I don't know what the problem is with that?!

He drinks fizzy all day in the parks, but when we are in the room he likes some squash for a change. We are going to be away for three weeks and thats a long time to live on fizzy rubbish, as he doesn't enjoy plain water.

He is a lovely, good, kind husband who looks after me all year round, and if he wants a little squash a few times a day on holiday then thats alright with me!! I love water (though not necessarily the stuff out of American taps!!) so it doesn't worry me, but its nice to look after someone you love sometimes!!!

We may still buy it when we arrive, I was just checking whether I could take it if necessary, as we probably won't want to rush to a shop during our first few days. Now I know the option is there thanks to everyone who answered the question!

okay I get it - only trying to help!!
We all have our own little quirks, we take Bisto gravy for instance for our son.

I was merely explaining you could buy it in Orlando and also if needed there are alternatives.

i think you're also not allowed to take dried meat (like dried salami)...they'll toss it into the big bin ....and it's a very funny sight to see when they do it....they put on these big long heavy duty rubber gloves that go right up to their shoulders and take hold of the salami as if it's radioactive and throw it into this huge covered bin...
funniest thing i've ever seen...

Ye we are just back & we took 2 bottles one in each suitcase i taped up the lids(read some where this was the weakeast point!), wrapped in bubble wrap and put inside 2 black bags so that if they did burst it would hopefully be limited leakage,but they did not burst, thank goodness. We went to super market & did not see any orange squash, what do there kids drink !!!
My DS (2yr old) will not & does not drink anything else & honestly it is easy to pack it so why not it saves looking for it when you arrive & are tired & saves a couple of pounds. I will certianly be doing it next time infact I am going to take 3 bottles !!!as we just had enough to come home on plane & no more & no-one else except DS was allowed to drink it .
