Do I need to have a doctors note to carry my prescription medication into USA?

I had never even thought about it before but just read something that said I should have one.

I never needed a doctors note but I took my prescription along with them just in case

It might depend on the medication though especially if it was something like strong painkillers/Oramorph etc

If its in your case checked in you don't but if your carrying it on board think you need something or just take what you might need and put rest in case

Mine were on board in my hand lugguage - but it was back in 2010 so things could easily have changed

There is another thread on here that has gone into great detail about takingdoctors notes and the reason for doing so,Youmight want to check that out :thumbsup2

It will all depend onthe type of medication your taking and how much! If ts narcotics then its advisable you take one incase your meds get lost or stolen as this way it will be easier for you to get the medicine replaced.
Also remember to include any fax/phonenumbers of your doctor and hospital so theycan contact them if the need arises.

Do NOT store the meds in your checked luggage as they can get stolen or case can get lost leaving you with no meds.

Ok thanks.

It's a few different things so just wanted to check.

Probably just easier to ask my dr to write me something out as I have to go back before the holiday anyway.

Thanks everyone

How do they drug test? I've been through US customs before and they've never mentioned it. Not that I would have an issue, just wondering.

Another question is I sometimes take Promethazine for sleeping. This is not a prescription drug here but it is in the US (I didn't take any with me last year and found out at Walgreens it's prescription only)

Will I be able to take it without a prescription?

Thanks everyone for responses! :) I will try find that thread and have a read.

Ive never had any issues taking my medication to USA. I take all of mine in my hand luggage too scared incase my case is lost or broken into.

You aren't drugs tested on the way in! That would require analysis of a biological specimen (normally hair or urine although can be sweat).

Drug tested :confused3 Are you sure! This will be my 4th time travelling with narcotics and have NEVER been tested on the way in or out.
