People line up just like at Disney. With Spiderman, pictures seem to be almost continuous. The is a special place for photos with Spiderman. It is across the street from the Spiderman ride at the back of a store. It is a photo-op place where you can take your own or buy your photo with Spidey.

I just had a look at my map from last trip. There is a section called Character Zones. It lists times and locations for photo ops with the characters. Spiderman appears with the Marvel Super Heros during a parad at IOA Marvel Island usually every hour on the hour (times change with park hours). Spiderman also appears like damo said at The Marvel Alterniverse Store for photos from 9:40A-5:15P (again, based on park hours).

Are their many characters at Universal like Disney

It depends on which character you want to meet. If it's a popular character there'll be a line, but there are other atmosphere characters that you can simply walk up to more often than not.

Great interaction with the Grinch.....the girls were really having fun with him (or her)

More....and you really have a chance to get your pics with them because they roll them out more often.
You have:
Grinch, Cat in Hat, Guy, Sam I Am, Things 1 and 2, The circus guy, Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Spiderman, Captain America, Popeye Bluto and Olive Oyl, Betty Boop, A jurassic park Nursery handler with a baby Triceratops, Merlin, The Cast of the sinbad show, Dragon stilt Walkers.....am I forgetting anyone at IOA?
The studios you'll see, Doc and Marty from Bttf (face characters) Dora, spongebob, boots, patrick, Scooby Doo, Shaggy, Curious George, Man in the Yellow Hat, Barney, Woody Woodpecker, and the girl....woodpecker. Alex and the Penguins from Madagascar, Shrek, donkey and Fiona(she's a face) Zorro, Esmerelda, Ricky and Lucy (face characters) Jimmy Nuetron, Mummy Stiltwalkers, The Blues Brothers, and I dont know if they still have The Flintstones, The Rubbles, Betty Boop, Popeye, Olive and Bluto....all face charactes.
And the cool thing about the characters at Universal, they're all wondering the streets.....or driving up on something, then they line you up if a crowd gathers. Zorro picked up my daughters hat when she dropped it, and handed it to her on his sword....A mummy Stiltwalker snuck behind a lady and kind of leered at her....a lot more fun than disney's typical people in suits....in my opinion.

The characters are excellent at USO. Some of the best interaction we've ever experienced.

There are times there will be an actual line to see them, but then other times, they just sort of "show up" wherever you are.

Our last trip the week before last, we were sitting at the bar at Finnegan's in US enjoying a pint and some lunch, and Lucy and Ricky just walked in and grabbed a seat a few barstools down from us. They really melted in initially like everyone else, until they started squabbling with each other and giving the bartenders a hard time. It was a fantastic, unexpected show -- and one I'd never expect to see sitting at a bar in a lunchery.

And Captain America IS alive and well in IOA.

If memory serves me well... Spiderman was at the charachter breakfast at Confusco Grill (i think thats the name of it) he spent alot of time at the table and posed for more than a few pictures. I never found it difficult to get a photo with any character, Live or in costume. They are so accomodating!

is there any place you can get a list of which characters will be where at any given time?
