I force myself to sit down at the computer as soon as possible to organize and delete.
For really large batches of pics, check out the free downloadable photo tool at Shutterfly. Their 'grading' system lets me go through pictures quickly, and after I'm done, I just delete the ones with no stars. It's slick!
I order the prints I need (including photopass), then put all photos on a CD, label it and put it in a file cabinet.
I've been a photo hound since the days of film - so I have a large file cabinet that holds negatives and now CD's. I have separate files for every year, and inner files with labels (vacation, family, house, motorcycle, etc). These go back 20 years - it's a biiiiiiiiiiig cabinet!
I did purchase a separate 20gig hard drive awhile back, so I can now keep a few years worth of photos on the computer without dragging it down. I keep everything there for a few years, just so they're handy for projects.
But I make sure and do the CD right after we get back from a trip - otherwise it's too easy to forget what I've done and what's still left to be done!
