Taking Kids Out Of School....

I find this very objectionable and the reason why I posted again previously. If someone can justify pulling their child from school, it works for them, whatever, FINE. But what is just getting obnoxious are the comments that those who take their children from school for vacations somehow are actually BETTER than those who don't???!!!! That is taking it a bit too far.
Fred,
Maybe I can make you see this another way so you won't be so upset ? I don't think Wishing on a Star was putting down those that don't take kids out of school, but rather, pointing out that those families that do take their children out to vacation may be doing so as a necessity to getting some precious family time ? I know we treasure our vacations because there are few times we are all together as a family. My husband works such long hours---often 7 days a week---and I know vacations are a time for all of us to stop and smell the roses, so to say. The school year is so hectic with homework, projects, CCD, sports, music lessons etc. I know when we get ready to go on vacation my kids say, "yeah....we get to have dad all to ourselves".
So I really don't think the comment Wishing made was suggesting anything other than for some families, the time they find to vacation may be some very much needed family time that they might not otherwise get unless they did it on school time ? I can honestly say it's been like this for us many years.

We are looking forward to the HUGE learning experience NYC has to offer the week of Thanksgiving

Hey, that's where we'll be, too!!! and... taking our 2nd grader and 6th grader out of school for the 3 days prior to turkey day.

In our situation, the elementary school and middle school are on the same "track" (year-round) schedule, but the high school is on a "traditional" schedule. My 9th grader is out for that week, but the 2nd & 6th are in for Mon, Tues, Wed. - poor planning by the school district in my mind, but hey, that's another thread. We'll have only 1 month (July) and 2 weeks (xmas) - in which all 3 kids will be out of school at the same time. Our options are limited. Pulling kids out of school is obviously not a daily ritual or one to be taken lightly, but it is sometimes the only option in order to partake in family events.

As for the OP, I vote for "tell the school the truth"; the kids always end up sharing their experiences and you don't want a reputation of the parent who "makes up stories". ;) Have a great trip.

Is this in reference to a specific comment made by a specific person or just your take on the entire thread?

Well, since this obviously has turned into a debate, I invite you to continue the discussion on the Debate Board.

Thanks. :D
