We are planning a trip 2nd week of January next year to Sequoia. We would like a Montana room - I read on another thread that the hotel will probably give upgrades during off-peak periods.

We are travelling with 2 kids (6 & 9). Do you think I can take a chance, pay for a standard room and ask for an upgrade when we check in? :rolleyes1

Would you be happy staying in one of the outer lodges just in case they don't or can't offer you an upgrade? Though chances are they will have Montana rooms available, and I'm sure you can always pay the difference when you get there, if they don't kindly offer you a free upgrade!! ;)

Ah, that's a good thought - I think if I have the option of paying for the Montana room on the spot, it's a good backup plan.

Although having said that, it's not the end of the world if we have to stay in one of the separate lodges ... just not as convenient. ;)

That's the best way to look at it!!! :)

You can but ask and all they can say is no or ask you to pay the extra.
Hope it works out for you :goodvibes
