I must have been under a rock for a while. How long have fast food restaurants been charging a "Take Out Tax"?

I have gotten hooked on the new McDonald's salads, and for some reason I checked out my receipt today. Salad was 3.99 and "Take Out Tax" is .32, for a total of $4.31. Our regular food tax in North Carolina is 2%, this Take Out Tax is 8%.

When did this happen and just what is it for?

not sure. I cannot remember the last time I went in and sat down to eat at a Fast Food restaurant.

I think that all varies by state... ours doesn't do it except always on sodas.

Gotta love those strange taxes. I believe that water is not taxed in Ohio, but if you buy a bag of ice, it is taxed. Go figure.

Wow, food is only 2% there?

Everything(food, clothes, groceries, etc.) purchased in my city or county is 9%

I've never heard of a "take out" tax, though.

PA taxes all food that is prepared and served. We do not pay sales tax on food items bought in a grocery/discount store. There is tax on soft drinks and other non-essential foods.
