It's been since 1996 that I've vacationed in WDW and this February we'll be going for a week. I was just talking about the "Take Flight" ride with my sister, we were trying to remember what it was called. So I searched it up today and it's been closed since 1998 :( It had the same Disney feel to it as Horizons and Carousel of Progress, all of which we will not be able to enjoy. Atleast spaceship earth is still around.

Go ride Buzz Lightyear, Jules, it has the same air conditioning as if you had wings and a lot better repeat value in the attraction, even if the song isn't as catchy -

thanks, I'll definitely ride it. I remember seeing it on the Rosie O'donnell show when she was in Disney World, I just hadn't realized that it had replace Take Flight.

Song???? Buzz Lightyear SpinAround has a song? I guess I didn't notice it while trying to get the high score.

As for Carousel of Progress, it's still there, but not always open. Check the board at the hub to see if it's open the day you are there and the times, because it ususally closes early.

There's lots of other things that have changed since '96. World of Motion is also gone as well as the original Journey into Imagination ride in EPCOT.

I think d-r was referencing the predecesor with the song... If you had wings, you could do many things, you could widen your world, if you had wings.

DisneyJules,

I understand how certain memories really make the trip. And Dream flight (and before that If You Had Wings) was one of my favorite memories.

And the old adage is true. Nature abhors a change, and so do most of us. With that said, I really think you’ll enjoy Buzz. It's something that is just plain fun.

Did they do it the way they should have? Did Disney give us everything they could? Is it done in "Walt" style?

Who cares!! It's fun!! A LOT OF FUN!!! And sometimes, taken in the big picture, "fun" is enough!!

Whoa!!!! Landbaron, you trollin' for Captian Crook or something? Fun is enough? What gives??? Man, you've raked me over the coals for those exact same sentiment so many times I can't believe what I just read. Wow!

So, I guess you're now willing to admit that PW, taken by itself and out of the context of what was best for AK, is really ok too...because it is fun? Perhaps you also see the genius of adding Aladdins Magic Carpet to a barren area at MK, for the enjoyment of the kiddies, is good as well?

Landbaron maybe you've been listening after all! Now maybe some others will give me a little credit too...Nah...

Note: I fully believe I have set myself up for an utter and complete lambasting, haven't I???

yes, I meant "if you had wings, had wings, had wings" but Buzz does have that drum rat a tat tat =

you know, I have nothing but happy memories of if you had wings, but I would rather have Buzz

Whoa!!!! Landbaron, you trollin' for Captian Crook or something? Fun is enough? What gives???
Yep! And it looks like I caught me a WHOOPER of a pirate instead!!!

Absolutely not, my friend!! Are you sure you read my whole post? Or did you jump for the ‘reply’ button as soon as you saw the word ‘fun’?

It is only in the context of “The Big Picture” that it is OK to be fun (and that doesn’t necessarily mean GREAT)!! In the MK, with sooooo many wonderful things in it and replacing a less than thrilling ride in the first place, FUN in more than enough.

PW in the context of AK – just plain sucks!!! No matter how much fun it is!

Next:
Perhaps you also see the genius of adding Aladdin’s Magic Carpet to a barren area at MK, for the enjoyment of the kiddies, is good as well?
Yes!! Yes!! A thousands times – YES!!!! Remember, my good Pirate, that I was one of the only car 3 members that didn’t complain about Aladdin before I saw it. In concept I was quite willing to accept the gift. It wasn’t replacing anything and even though I thought the spinner bit was a little lame, it’d be good for the kids and perhaps add a little vitality to Adventureland. That was until I saw what an absolute shambles it created in the surrounding area!! How it totally decimated the theme of Adventureland. How it totally stunk up the entire land!!!

Now do you see the difference?

Note: I fully believe I have set myself up for an utter and complete lambasting, haven't I???
This wouldn’t happen if you had been listening to me for the past three years. I haven’t changed my opinion all that much over the years. The only real difference is that my fishing skills have improved. Now, I can reel you in any time I like!!!! ;)

Gee, talk about Freaky Friday...

Now, while Buzz may be a lot of fun and all, it's somehow always struck me as having a "cheap" feel to it. Take away the interactive elements and you're not left with a great deal (the Buzz A-A figure is found back in the queue area) beyond some brightly colored, two-dimensional painted backdrops. Fun yes - I agree with almost everything Baron said. It's just the answers to every one of the (quoted) questions is NO.

Well plain old fun is good and all but there was always something special about rides such as Horizons, Carousel of Progress and Take Flight, they offered an educational theme while still entertaining their audiences. There was something to be learnt. I miss that element in some of the new rides and isn't that what Epcot is all about?

That was my point. I'm glad you didn’t miss it. But it's OK because of the overall concept and the context within the “Big Picture” that I tried to tell Peter about.

Sometimes a "B" ticket is OK. Sometimes a "D" ticket will do the trick. And sometimes the circumstances DEMAND an "E" ticket!! (Or in AK's case 3 or 4 "E" tickets!!)

So Hell didn’t freeze over and I haven’t lost my mind. Just trying to keep it real!!

I totally agree DVC. I think buzz is a great ride, but it could use a little more in terms of AAs and complexity. But it is a damn good ride. Unofficial Guide lists it as a must see and it's in the top 3. It's the big picture that matters, so even if PhilarMagic isn't a Soarin' clone, it will be fun because we still have Space, Splash, etc.

I agree totally DVC. I just thought, well, you know...

While Im not sure I agree with you, even if it does have a cheap feel to it, it certainly doesn't have as cheap a fill to it as "If You Had Wings" or "Dreamflight," does it?

All three attractions which have occupied this space naturally have their high and low points. Some of Dreamflight's early scenes looked rather poor, and indeed probably worse than both Space Ranger Spin and If You Had Wings. However, the peek into the vintage aircraft dining area and Paris streetscene of Dreamflight/Take Flight outshine Buzz in some respects. And yes, the tune to If You Had Wings evokes fond memories, more so in this regard than the later attractions.

Still, Buzz remains the most fun (without a doubt). The ride vehicles are vastly superior, you have the interactive component, and a very popular "theme" (Buzz Lightyear). All very good. My concern, if nit-picking a bit, centers around shooting at targets placed on what appears to be just painted backdrops. Even though none of these three attractions were ever intended to be among the MK's more elaborate, such aspects to this ride just look rather "cheap", too simplistic for a modern attraction. To that end, Buzz certainly should look a lot better than "wings", since you would expect improvements over more than two decades.

I think the two dimensionality of BLSRS (AKA The Buzz Ride) is intentional so as not to detract from the targets. It is a really fun ride, and DW and I make a point to ride it at least 2-3 times when we go there.

Baron, I too thought Hell was freezing over when I read that you thought FUN WAS ENOUGH* (*in this case), but I know better than to hope that this might be a generalization. ..;)

As far as the Philharmagic goes, well, I really miss the Lion King show. That was another stop DW and I made on each trip. The movie was so well done, it felt like a shortened combination of the movie that was slightly reminiscent of the play. I will have to judge for myself next year when DW and I get more points we can borrow...I keep telling her, get a summer job at TDS while it is still part of Disney so we can get a discount and buy more points;)... She keeps declining and asking me to stop depressing her.

BTW, another new ride since you've been there last is the "Winnie the Pooh" ride. There always seems to be a long wait, so I would definitely FP it. It is kind of two dimensional, lots of colors, and the ride mechanism does a good job of bringing the books to life; I especially like the car bouncing in the Tigger section.

If you don't have kids with you and you like lore, the "Keys to the Kingdom" tour is amazing. If I recall, you have to be 13 or older to go on the behind the scenes tour-please correct me if I am wrong. It was amazing how much thought goes into (how should I put this) the combing of Cinderella's Hair. These tours have been revamped in the last couple of years.

The Haunted Mansion hasn't changed, but is still on our list as an important ride (with good A/C)

I think the Tiki Room has also been redone since you have been there last as well. It is now "Under New Management".

One last New thing since you have been there last; The Aladdin Ride in Adventureland. While it has caused its share of problems, doesn't really fit in well with the Adventureland theme, looks a lot better since they hid it behind foliage... It still usually has a long line (Why you might ask) because it is bright, fanciful, and little kids like that.

OK, What else has changed since 1996 in MK? Was AK even open? Let's Help DisneyJules figure what he needs to see...

:bounce:

OK...before we go playing the cheap card..I remind you that the first two scenes in Delta Dreamflight were supposed to look that way. If you remember, you first saw the giant pop-up book...then you enter one. So, it was all supposed to be a giant pop-up book, and there were some pretty neat things that were created as far as a giant pop-up book was concerned. At the end of the ride, after you have "really"visited places, you again would see the giant pop-up book theme with the pages turning. Again, a pretty neat effect.

Delta Dreamflight also had some great music. Any attraction that had THREE different and complete songs written for it wins some points in my book.

We're gonna take you flyin'
On the air you've been relyin'
'Cause Dreamflight's bound for non-stop fantasy

From the earliest days of tryin'
There's been no denyin'

...well, you get the idea.

How about...

Life on a Delta Dreamflight
the most wonderful flight of your life
once you've taken a Delta Dreamflight
you see dreams in a different light

Delta welcomes you back from your Dreamflight

etc.

etc.

etc.

..great, now I have to go dig up my video of the attraction!

OhanaFamily, *cough* she ;) So what else has changed since 1996, I hadn't realized just how much had changed. Any of my other favorite rides gone?
