Our ds recently turned 17 and our car ins premium would increase steeply if we stayed with AAA. So I shopped around and GEICO had a much better price but still ~$600/year more than what we pay now, even without his own car.
So I asked the agent if we should enroll ds17 in a defensive driving class to help lower the premium. He said we should IF we had a 3rd car that ds was a FT driver of. He said since dh & I are the FT drivers of our 2 cars, it would benefit us most if WE took the defensive driving course.
I found one on AAA.com for $35 which I thought was great until I saw it on GEICO's website for just $19.99 and they'll send the results directly to GEICO with our policy # so we get discounts asap.
The discount is 5% for 3 years which is well worth the cost of taking the course. It's online and we can return to finish it as often as we want.

I don't work for GEICO or even in the insurance business at all but just putting it out there if you want to lower your premium. I'd guess all insurance companies offer something like this.
I was always under the assumption that a dd course was for only people with points on their license from tickets or accidents, or some court-ordered thing, but anyone can take it and get the discount. :thumbsup2

Thank you for the tip. I looked it up and my insurance company also offers a discount. Thanks!

My insurance company (State Farm) also offers a 5% discount but only if you take the combo of 30 classroom hours + 10 behind-the-wheel instruction hours. The cost for that - $380 - pretty much negates all of my potential savings from the discount. :( I'm in PA.

I have taken this every 3 years since I was a kid (in 50's now!)- The course gives you a mandatory 10% auto insurance discount off the liability, no fault, and collision insurance premiums for 3 years. The last one I took was in the community room at a local Panera Bread so it was great, all got food and drinks and took the course there. I have taken it online before too but that was to painful LOL, easier to just sit there and take it.

I believe in NYS it is 10% no matter what insurance company you have.

In Georgia, if you have a clean driving record for the past 3 years and take a defensive driving class, your insurance company HAS to give you a 10% reduction on your liability premium. It's state law. I work for a driving school & taught that class for a few years.

One more tip: Take your son too even if he does not get the discount. We made our son take the course when we was a new driver and he learned so much and took it much more seriously than he would have it we had been telling him these things. He was and is a good driver but I like the idea of adding that little bit of extra insurance.
