Our ds recently turned 17 and our car ins premium would increase steeply if we stayed with AAA. So I shopped around and GEICO had a much better price but still ~$600/year more than what we pay now, even without his own car.
So I asked the agent if we should enroll ds17 in a defensive driving class to help lower the premium. He said we should IF we had a 3rd car that ds was a FT driver of. He said since dh & I are the FT drivers of our 2 cars, it would benefit us most if WE took the defensive driving course.
I found one on AAA.com for $35 which I thought was great until I saw it on GEICO's website for just $19.99 and they'll send the results directly to GEICO with our policy # so we get discounts asap.
The discount is 5% for 3 years which is well worth the cost of taking the course. It's online and we can return to finish it as often as we want.
I don't work for GEICO or even in the insurance business at all but just putting it out there if you want to lower your premium. I'd guess all insurance companies offer something like this.
I was always under the assumption that a dd course was for only people with points on their license from tickets or accidents, or some court-ordered thing, but anyone can take it and get the discount.
