Tahoe question

I am planning a trip to Tahoe. We've never been. Trying to decide between Squaw and Northstar. We have 3 kids- 11, 9, and 7. Which do you prefer?

Squaw Valley is breathtakingly beautiful BUT it is not near Tahoe......its not super far but there is no lake view or the quick easy access to all the lake activities.

Northstar is closer to the lake itself - IMO I would stay at the Lake and then take a drive down to Squaw.

I agree, stay at Northstar but visit the Squaw High Camp for a day.

I prefer Squaw which, by the way, isn't much further to Lake Tahoe (if at all) then Northstar. And it's nearer to Tahoe City, which is more packed with outdoor activities. Squaw is more dramatic with the mountain and cable car and it has a great village filled with activities. Northstar also has a village now and it is closer to King's Beach, which isn't as nice as Tahoe City, in my opinion, but is closer to the casinos. Really, they are both very very lovely.

DBF loves to ski at Northstar but he is perfectly happy with Squaw. As everyone else has said, Squaw is closer to Tahoe so that's what we usually go with. I'm not a skier so while he's skiing I'm hanging out in the room or at a spa getting some type of treatment. Of course we've only done this a few times as it's pretty pricey and it takes some good budgeting for me to make it happen. lol

When are you going to Tahoe? Skiing? Summer? That could make a big difference.

Not sure when you are visiting, or if I'm too late, but there is also South Lake Tahoe with the casinos, more hotels & places to eat. The views are just as lovely. We enjoyed driving around the entire lake. I loved the views from the Nevada side the best. Unfortunately, there is little in the way of hotels or dining on that side.

If you are talking skiing/boarding, I would pick Northstar, unless your children are at an advanced skill level.

If you are talking just a place to stay and enjoy the area, I would pick Squaw.

That's what I was thinking, too. Squaw has much more challenging runs, but is less fun if you're stuck on their green slopes (and their "colors" are harder than the other Tahoe resorts). A green at Squaw is comparable to a blue at Northstar (well, maybe easier, but the Squaw blues are much harder than the Northstar ones). My DD has more fun at Northstar since there is more that she can do there.

I agree. Also, if your kids are going to be doing a ski/snowboard school, Northstar instructors and the programs are really terrific. If you're going to be there for a few days, why not try them both out for some variety? Sugarbowl is another great place in that general area to give a try. Nice, WIDE bowls and lots of different types of terrain for beginners and advance alike.

We visited South Lake Tahoe as well the scenery is awesome took a dinner cruise in the evening very nice.
