Since there aren't tree farms here (unless you are looking for a Palm tree), we go to the store and pick one out. The pickings got pretty slim this year (my tree is very slim!) If I can get a good deal on a really nice fake one, we'll get one. Otherwise, we'll just hope for a better batch of real ones next year.

I've seen some fake trees that look very real. Much less mess too. Just burn a pine scented candle and you are all set. :lmao:

"Day Four: conditions remain the same. The growing pile of dirty clothing in the basement is beginning to take on a distinct personality, and it's very possible that I saw it move today. I am fearing for my life."

:rotfl2: I hope your electricity is restored soon. No one wants a mountain of laundry to face.

:rotfl:

We're gonna do Thanksgiving, but not MVMCP as I don't think it will live up to MNSSHP. Then again, we might do it just to say we did both. It will be our last trip until dh's and my 25th wedding anniversary, when we will have to find someone (anyone) who wants to keep our three kids for 5 days. Any takers? :rotfl: :lmao:

Sure, send them on up. As long as they like BIG dogs and don't mind a little slime, they will be all set.

:rotfl:

And note the signature line ticker. I put the reservations on a 14 day hold with AAA today and will go by the AAA vacations location in Fayetteville to pay the deposit on Friday.

Going on 25 years? I'd keep your kids if I could. :goodvibes

I'll take yours if you take mine. ;) Since I have no one to watch my girls overnight, all our vacations revolve around things we can do with them.

See, now that shows how much I was paying attention last night. It will be 15 years, not 25 in Aug 2011. :lmao: I sure could use some sleep.

You have a 2yo, right? No offense, please, but my 2yo ship has sailed and won't come back until I have grandchildren.

I'm in the same boat as you. No overnight sitters anymore.

I keep hearing that one. Though many nights I think my 2 year old is easier than the 9 year old. I'm sure you know what I mean having one of those yourself. One of my good friends tells me she'd watch both girls if I could guarantee the little one wouldn't poop in her pants. :lmao:

The good news is kids usually do think hot dogs are a gourmet meal.

It was in the 80's here today and I currently have the a/c running. I'm just sayin'. (The new catchphrase at my work when we've said something not so nice.)

Legomom, Florida must be sounding better and better.

You I can forgive.

Grumpy Pirate has obviously not been following ANY of this.... Or has a very warped sense of humor.:confused3 He does realize people can DIE in this climate in the winter without heat and power??

Sorry, I'm not usually so thin-skinned but our situation really is dire. I'm trying to keep my chin up but it's getting very hard to not want to just curl up and cry. It's 39 degrees in my elderly in-law's house and they have to find someplace to sleep at night, and go check on the pipes and throw out food every day (weird, I know, that food would still spoil, but it does).

Just sayin'....:rolleyes1

You have NO IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl2: I'm checking rentals there daily!

.

If I had the space, I'd be clearing a room out for you and yours now.

Can your in-law's sleep at your house? I'm sure the more people, the warmer it is. I think I'd be family bedding it about now just so I can use my kids as little heaters.

Several years ago, we were living in a rented house in Dillon, SC. The rental was a house with NO INSULATION. That winter, it iced very badly and to top it all off, I was pregnant with ds, we had a 1 yo, and the heat pump for upstairs died. We all slept on the floor for three weeks because the landlord was a jerk who did not get his act together. That was our last winter in that house. Three weeks of subfreezing weather pregnant with a baby and sleeping on the floor was enough to take the 5 acres of property my parents were offering us and start building.

They are welcome to and we extended that to them, but we're so heck and gone from FIL's work and everything else in their daily lives, that it's just not practical unless there was no other option. My BIL down in MA is actually closer because they can get on a major highway and be there in less than 30 minutes.

We had an apartment similar to that before we got this house. My father was so horrified that we were living in such a place, that he was very instrumental in getting us in here! And as if the no-insulation thing weren't enough, the landlord had the heating set up separate from the rent - there were two apts. in the building, each with its own thermostat zone, but with one oil tank. We had to split the cost with the other tenant, who was always late paying her half. The oil company didn't care who was responsible, they weren't coming to refill until the old bill was paid off so we woke up to a cold apartment more than once....:headache:

OK PEOPLE, in order to lighten the mood around here (I know I need it!!:rotfl: ) here is something just totally ridiculous!

A miserable thing when we have no power is not having water. You don't realize how much water you use until you don't have any. Running water is a wonderful thing and a hot shower is even better. Not having a working toilet is no picnic. Driving places to fill jugs every day and lugging them back home is not fun. I really feel for the people cold and without water.

LegoMom, how's the water situation? Glad you are warm with the wood stove.

Hmmm, actually I do. (in a subsequent post YOU say to LIGHTEN up)

Since I grew up in the midwest, I have experienced what you are going through many times.

Now, my question to you is, did you prepare?

Do you have an alternate source of heat for warmth? (fireplace?)

alternate source of cooking, (small portable gas grill that can be used outside?)

vented porch with a space heater?, wood burning emergency stove installed? Generator? (portable or fixed)

ten day supply of non-perishable food for all in the household, plus two or four extra persons? a few containers of potable water?

Check with your local office of emergency prepairdness and/or the local red cross, they will provide you with lists, and you can also get them on-line.

(and yes, I have all that stuff)

Mostly you have to be prepared mentally to know that it is a survivable situation, maybe uncomfortable, but survivable.

later...
