Okay moms- any helpful hints for sewing patches on to uniforms? For what this uniforms cost the required patches should come already attached. The tought of sewing on 3 patches is too much for me to handle and DS needs this done before summer camp starts. He better not grow out of this uniform anytime soon.

What patches? Are you ATA?

I use the glue stuff to glue them on (I think it's called patch attatch?) And you need super strength if you are trying to sew them.

Not sure if we are ATA. Never bothered to ask love the school too much to switch anyway. The patches are the korean flag, the american flag and the school logo. Where can I get this patch attach? Can it withstand the washer and dryer?

You would know if you are ATA. Most craft/sewing stores would have it I imagine. I take mine to the tailor and have them sewn if I can't do it myself. I have gotten much better with my machine though.

conveniently (yeah right) our Taekwondo place sold the patch attatch. And they did hold on for a few washing and then I ended up sewing them on.

We had the same patches we are uta. just wait until you have to sew the black band on the bottom of the uniform when they make black belt 1st degree.

Thanks. Going to Michael's tonight. I'd rather glue it on every couple of washings that have to sew these darn things on. We are a while from bb. DS is only 5. He's testing for high yellow soon. Should be high green by end of summer camp.

Take it to a tailor!!!! I sew and those little buggers are hard on needles. The glue didn't look as nice as having them sewn on-especially if they're going to compete

My kids do Tang Soo Do and not only did they need to have patches sewn on, they also needed color trim removed/attached every time they advanced a belt level. I used my sewing machine and stitched close to the edge. A lot of the kids who have their patches glued on eventually end up losing them because the glue doesn't hold up well to repreated washings.

If you don't have a sewing machine, I second the suggestion of a tailor. many dry cleaners around us do tailoring. I think that some of the TSD moms mentioned paying about $10 for trim & 3 patches.

Thank goodness that DD18 is a blackbelt instructor now! Her uniform has embroidered logo and flags on it. And no more sewing trim around the edges!

We have to sew little black stars on the uniform pants (after you make black belt). Now those have been a BEAR!

sit your self on the couch, turn on a good tv show, get some black thread (or whatever color works best) and sew away. I sew on all my own patches and have never had any problems with them coming off. I'd rather take an hour to sew the first time then have to always be reattaching with glue - no thanks. I've got many that have gone through the washer and dryer probably 100 times at least with no problems.

Well, how I do it is give the patches and uniform to my husband :rotfl2:

Seriously, the required 2 years in home ec. in high school paid off for my DH. Sadly my school never required it and I got stuck with wood shop :faint:

Anyway, my DH sews all the patches. We even brought a sewing machine 75% off at Target (got to love Target clearance prices :woohoo: )

Btw--We tried the patch attach, we personally hated it. It held up at first but after a while the patches would start coming off the uniform.

GOOD LUCK!

take it to your local dry cleaner, they have seamstresses in there and they will attach them for you- its well worth it! Thats how I get all the patches on my daughters girl scout vest and how I got them all on her karate uniform!

I'm going to try the glue and if that doesn't work well them I'll find a dry cleaner that can sew them on. Thanks for the help.

DS is responsible for his own uniforms now, but I did this for 10 years. I have to admit that I never tried to sew the black banding on myself - even when DH & I were both out of work & had no money we still took them to the dry cleaners for that! LOL

Only once did I try sewing a patch by hand - it didn't last long despite close stitching. DS was at TKD at least 3x/week and there was just too much "pulling" on the stitches to last. The glue wouldn't have worked either. (I've sued it for other things.) After that, I always sewed the patches on by machine using a heavy duty needle & just went slowly along the inside of the heavy edge of the patch. (slowly because most were circles) To be honest, the hardest thing about sewing them on was getting them straight! Our uniforms are the "jacket" type with 2 flaps that cross in front, instead of the pull-over shirt type.

More recently, DS has been buying what he calls canvas uniforms. OMG! :scared1: Those are miserable to sew on! I've helped a couple times. I don't know how he stands wearing them - they're so stiff & rough feeling!
