Tabetha: Disney fan who came to the "World" late in life, and am now making up for it! This is my second trip on property, last year we stayed at Pop Century with my sister.
Greg: Disney fan that has been to the "World" pretty much every year for the last 15 years. Has seen it all, and is starting to see a little tarnish on the magic. Has been his lifelong dream to stay at the Polynesian.
We've been dating for over a year now, and this is our first "alone trip"!
02/17/05: Goodbye Poly, Hello Wilderness Lodge, or, The Best Birthday Ever
It is a wistful morning in Rapa Nui Room 2115. Today we are saying goodbye to the Poly, to the joys of a monorail resort, and to our newly audible neighbours. We havent heard a peep through the adjoining room door all week, but today is different. We hear noises everywhere. It is clear that the Presidents Week crowds are starting to arrive. Its not bad, but its the reason Im awake before Stitch calls. We pack up all our gear and I go over the bill. I tell Greg that Id like to go down and have a couple of the charges applied to my card, thinking itll be easier than trying to pay him back for stuff later. I take the charge for my spa treatement, (only fair) the afternoon tea, and half of the breakfast we charged to the room. Greg takes the strawberries and champagne, photos and the other half of breakfast. Greg will finish packing, call for luggage assistance, and meet me in the lobby of the Great Ceremonial House.
I take the last walk through the grounds, slowly. I love the Poly, and would return here in a heartbeat. The CM at Guest Services adjusts the bill to my instructions, and shows me the adjusted charges. Perfect! I know it seems silly to want to do it that way, but Id much rather owe money to Visa than to Greg. The adjustment took much less time than I had anticipated, so I decide to look for a penny press specifically for the Polynesian. I search the ground floor and come up empty. I go upstairs. Nothing. Drat. I go back down to the lobby and grab a seat. Then for some reason I decide that Greg wont be done in the room for a while, and it might not be fun to wait for the luggage guy by himself, and Im bored, so I fill my mug with Lemonade, and head back to the room. On the way, I thought how funny it would be if Id walked all this way for nothing, and if Greg wasnt in the room anymore. Turns out, it was less funny than I thought. I walked in the room, saw all our luggage gone, and said, Greg? like he was hiding behind the lamp or something. What a dummy. I giggle, and hustle back to the GCH, and find Greg patiently waiting for me in the lobby. He had a feeling Id gone back to the room. He said the luggage was picked up, and will be delivered over to the Wilderness Lodge later that day. I love luggage transfer!
We slowly walk over to the TTC to catch a bus to the Wilderness Lodge. Im excited about staying there, we accidentally went there last year while trying to find our way somewhere else. From my first time seeing the lobby, and I was hooked. I knew I wanted to stay there someday. Well, someday is today! We were originally going to stay our last night at the Poly, while getting the most out of our last day of our DreamMaker Package park tickets, but when the total worked out to over $300 for one night, we thought it might be fun to try another resort. And by fun, I mean, way cheaper. I had called CRO and moved us over to the Wilderness Lodge, and got a Woods View room using the BDP code for just under $200. Better. We knew going from the Poly to a Value would be a bummer, and not the most special thing for my birthday. Besides, Greg had mentioned a couple of times how much he was looking forward to staying at the Wilderness Lodge, too. Turns out, resort hopping is FUN! We liked having something to look forward to on our last day took some of the sting out of it.
In the bus on the way over, Greg mentions that he hopes we get a good view. I shrug, telling him its a Woods View, so I guess it should be ok. Its a step above standard, I think. He figures it should be ok then. We turn the corner, and the lodge comes into view. I love it. I love the wilderness, I love the music, I love the décor. It just makes me happy.
We had decided to use some of our wishes on souveneirs (photo box for me, and a the statue clock to sentd to Gregs sister who just left for Australia the week before), and Greg suggests that I go to the gift shop and look into it while he checks in. I tell him that I want to put my card down for room charges (Im going to be buying a few things today), so I dont mind waiting with him. We get to the front desk, and Greg gives his name. The CM types it in, and coos, Oooh, the honeymooners! I think shes confused. She gets on the phone and calls someone. Mr. Komorowski is here. Now Im confused. Whos she talking to? Are we in trouble?
She takes my credit card, and chats about what a great time were going to have upstairs. The beef is really good, and the wine! Thats her favourite part. I turn and look at Greg.
What did you do?
Youll see.
The CM is worried that she spoiled the surprise but Greg just smiles.
No, this is perfect.
Apparently the expression on my face is priceless. I start to realize whats going on, and try not to start crying like a goof. The CM tells me that Greg is a keeper. I know, trust me. I cant believe how thoughtful/crazy/wonderful Greg is. Wed walked around the Poly the night before, and passed by one of the concierge longhouses. We talk about how nice it must be, and just say someday.
We finish up at the front desk just as someone comes to greet us. She shows us to the elevator, and where to put our room cards to get to the CONCIERGE FLOOR! For my birthday, Greg had called and changed our reservation. Our room isnt ready, and Greg still wants to keep that part of it a surprise. We leave our belongings with the concierge staff, and head to the busses. The only thing Id been really interested in at the Animal Kingdom had been closed the night we went for EMH, so Greg is making sure I get to do the Safari.
We stop in at Guest Services on the way in, and Greg announces, Its her birthday. I get my button, and were on our way. As we make our way through the crowds (yep, things are definitely getting busier), we stop to get our photo taken, and then hustle our way to pick up a FastPass for the Safari. We realize were both hungry, and I suddenly realize I forgot to grab our Q&C vouchers, once again. Duh. This was our last chance to use them, but I only kick myself a little bit for forgetting. We have lunch at the Tusker House. I contemplate the veggie sandwich, but when the CM at the cash register looks at me like I have two heads when I ask if it has eggplant in it (Im allergic), I quickly change my order to the salmon. Nothing in there to make my tongue swell up! Greg orders the turkey wrap and the corn chowder (this is a man who loves his chowder). We are thrilled with our food delicious. We enjoy watching a CM carrying a big stack of trays stop and kneel down to trade pins with a young boy. The trade takes place to their mutual satisfaction, and they tray guy gets back up and continues to work. He never even put down the trays.
We still have time before the safari, and so we do take a walk down one of the exploration trails. We see the birds, lots of Hippos, and a big family of gorillas, which I love. Greg gets lots of photos. It was a nice relaxing stroll.
Finally it is time for our Safari! We head back to the line I am greeted with a Happy Birthday Princess from the CM at the end of the line, and at the front, I am told that birthday girls ride up front. We slide into the first row of seats, and prepare to chase away the poachers! Ive never done the safari before, and I really like it. I like seeing all the different animals, and hope that theyre moderately happy in their environments.
We make our way out of the park, but not before buying copies of the photo taken earlier. Its funny.
We make our way back to the hotel to see if our room is ready. It is. Were given our keys, and pointed in the right direction, and we head to our room. I LOVE this room! We walk in to see a big card signed by Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger on the bed, wishing me a happy birthday tied to it are three helium balloons. Around the card, theyve arranged several towel animals Greg had specifically asked for them, knowing Id like them. We open the curtains, and see a cute little balcony, and step out. Our view is, from left to right, the Grand Floridian, Cinderallas castle (through the tree tops), Space Mountain and the Contemporary. Breathtaking. We see the monorail snake its way through the trees. Hooray! Gorgeous!
We run back inside, and check out the bathroom. The bath is a huge, two person Jacuzzi tub, surrounded by marble, with candles arranged on the marble shelf behind. And a cute towel penguin. Its just the best. Like freaks, we take photos of everything, Im giddy that theyve hung up my jacket, and neatly placed the personal items we left with the concierge staff in the room. We call for our luggage, enjoy some mid-day snacks man those cookies are good! and grab what we need to the Magic Kingdom. We head down to the dock, stopping by Old Faithful on the way.
I love taking the boat to the Magic Kingdom.
After we collect my birthday button from City Hall, we make a beeline for Buzz Lightyear we havent had a chance to ride it this trip. We decide that this is where we will use the Front of the Line pass bestowed upon us on Day One. Good choice, theyre not even giving out FastPasses, and the standby is quite long. For some reason, the girl checking FastPasses didnt collect our pass, and so we wonder if this means front of the line access all day. We ride, shoot aliens, and for the first time I kick Gregs butt.
We run over to Space Mountain whose FastPass line is the longest weve see all week. Our front of the line pass is collected from us, thus ending the gravy train at two rides. Thats ok, we cant stay here all day, anyway. We have 6:30 reservations at Bistro de Paris. We ride Space Mountain, and head to the TTC.
As we exit the monorail and head down the ramp, I notice that Greg is limping. Apparently the new shoes he bought in Buffalo are finally taking their toll. Not a bad track record for new shoes at Disney. He had wanted to wear a suit tonight for our nice dinner at Bistro de Paris, but Id put the kibosh on it. That means that Id have to wear the dress I brought, and the appropriate shoes which would have led to my own foot woes. Theyre great shoes, but not for walking around a theme park and going on rides! Ah well, maybe next time.
We get to Epcot, and have just enough time to walk back to France for our PS. Were shown upstairs, and to our table. Our waiter Jean Marc recommends that we start with Frances National Drink, the Kir Royale. Why not? Theyre a delicious start to the meal. We order our meals with recommendations from Jean Marc, order our little bottle of wine, and sit back to enjoy the wonderful ambiance and perfect service. I tell Greg that I learned while staying in Paris that being a waiter is not a job you do while going to school for a better job. It a career that instils some pride. As Jean Marc serves us, Greg sees what Im talking about. He is attentive without being intrusive and friendly without being too familiar. Greg orders the escargot, lobster, and the dessert sampler. I order the scallops, lobster and soufflé. We are delighted with everything. It is indeed the best meal of the trip. We finish up by sharing a glass of port and a pair of espressos. When all is said and done, weve made fair use of our Wishes for dinner, and dropped a hundred bucks on drinks. We wobble outside for Illuminations.
We find a spot along the wall outside France. Like Wishes, we see Illuminations through a tree. Consistency is important!
Epcot is open until Midnight for resort guests, so we make the best of it. We ride Mission Space a couple more times, and Ellens Energy thingy, and Test Track finally re-opens. Hooray!
Finally it is time to head back to the Lodge.
When we get back to our gorgeous room and see that the bed has been turned down ooh! Chocolates! Greg starts writing postcards, and insists that I use the Jacuzzi tub. I giddily begin filling it, and look for a way to turn it on. Theres no obvious switch, nor are there any instructions. Im tired and confused. Theres a black sensor underneath the faucet, and I push on that a couple of times. Finally Greg calls down to the front desk, and they try to describe how to turn on the tub. Nothing seems to work, and were getting frustrated. This tub was a selling point for Greg, and he wants it to work. Greg asks for someone to come up, and after resisting, the front desk sends a guy up, he spends some time trying to figure it out. No dice. We feel a little less like idiots. He goes off and brings another guy. They futz around for a bit, and finally get the tub working. The second guy shows us how we have to press the black button in two specific places to get the jets going. Weird. But at least it works. I spend some time in the tub, candles lit, and eventually fall asleep for a bit. I crawl into the king sized bed, and Greg takes a turn in the tub. I am fast asleep before he comes to bed good thing too, since its 2:30 am. I notice Greg coming to bed, and I slip into a deeper sleep. Such a peaceful resort.
Until
Around 5AM, I awaken to the weirdest sound. It is a hollow, mourning sound. I wonder if Im hearing metal work happening at the Magic Kingdom. Or emergency vehicles far away. I turn over, and see that Greg hears it too. Were both very confused. Greg goes to the door and looks out. Our room is directly overlooking the lobby, and there, 7 floors down, they are waxing the floors. Not awesome. Somehow, now that its a less spooky sound, it is easier to ignore. We fall asleep again for a few more hours. Later, we hear banging doors, and kids. Maybe having the concierge lounge right outside your door isnt so grand. Thats ok, we have to get up anyway.
We pack up our gear, and grab a wonderful breakfast we wish that wed had more time to spend at the hotel to enjoy our lounges. We realize that we have two extra Q&C vouchers left, and wonder what to do with them. We decide to give them away. I approach a couple of families before we find one who isnt going home today. When we finally do find one, I give the vouchers to the mom and say, have lunch on us. She didnt know what they were, so I explained them to her before we left. It was so nice to make someone surprised and happy. A really fun way to end our vacation.
We run down to meet our towncar, and Greg drops his postcards in the post box in the lobby. A split second later, he is swearing. Hes forgotten to put his sisters address on her card. And that, dear friends, is how you become 20 minutes late for your towncar service. Once again, I do a hail mary to the transportation, while Greg gets someone to open the mail box. Hm. Perhaps hed prefer that I not include this story. Ah, Im sure that if pressed, he could come up with a ******* story about me.
Anyway, thats our trip. We had an absolutely wonderful time. Thanks to the DreamMaker Package with Silver Add on, we were able to do things we probably wouldnt have otherwise done. We had 99% wonderful meals, and 100% wonderful weather. Id say it was the trip of a lifetime, but Id hate to limit it at that. Were now looking forward to other alone trips perhaps NYC in the spring, and Im looking forward to an extended trip to Disney with my sister in December to visit with family and take in the Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party.
The adventures just beginning!
Thanks for reading and encouraging me to continue and finish you guys are the best!
