t-shirt transfers vs. ordering from a store (and a design question)?

Hello there! I've been given the opportunity to decide on a designed t-shirt for my family's first ever trip to Disney World! I had just assumed I would order the shirts from a store, but I lucked out on this site and noticed that there is so much talent and craftiness on board here.

I read the FAQ's about iron on transfers. If I've never done this type of thing before, do you think it's doable for me to give this a try? I have about a month before my trip.

Also, do the cute names with character backgrounds transfer well to a t-shirt? I was thinking about trying to track one down that had "Disney World" instead of our individual names - or maybe I'll do each of our names...who knows, but I know I need to decide ASAP!!!

TIA for any advice you have for me!

I made my first ever shirts for a family trip last year. It was very simple. I ordered the transfer paper from Amy Mickey (do a google search and you will find her website) and requested some DISigns from the fabulous designers. I would recommend getting a border around your DISign as it makes it easier to cut out the image. Amy's transfers come with excellent instructions and you don't have to worry about mirroring the image. You can't really mess it up. The hardest part for me was deciding which DISign to use on the shirts. Good luck!

Unfortunately, it looks like Amy Mickey's shop doesn't do Disney designs anymore.

I've noticed a bunch of iron on transfers on Amazon, Staples, etc. Where does everyone get theirs?

The transfers from Amy come blank and then you download a design and print it on them. There are many designs here to choose from :)

i recently used the Jolee's brand found at Michaels craft store and they worked great. However if you are printing on anything other than a white shirt use the "dark fabric" transfer paper. The "light fabric" paper works super on white t shirts. The enclosed instructions were easy to follow and my families shirts (all 9 of us) came out fabulous.

amymickey.com has the BEST transfers and she sends easy to follow directions.. no flipping needed on any design.. She doesn't design Disney, but, there are other awesome designers on here to help out.

Ah, that makes sense! I have the day off today, so I might run down to Michaels since I have a gift card to pick up some Jolee transfers.

Once I get the hang of this, I'm wondering about 2-sided designs. Do you guys recommend doing the front and back of a shirt as long as there's a protective layer inside of the shirt?

Also, where do you find the best deals/quality on shirts? We want neon colors. Michaels? Walmart? Target?

I also say that Amy's are the way to go....nothing else compares in longevity!

Everyone raves about Amy's transfers. I've used hers and Avery dark tee transfers and they seemed as easy as Amy's. They (tee shirts) are worn many times after the trip and look good for many washes. I bought my tees from Jiffey tee shirts, but you are running close to time for your trip. Michaels sells all kinds of tees and totes. If you have an entire day to devote to making them, you might have time to order from Jiffey. As I recall, the turn around is less than a week. I have used Aveey transfers to make double sided ones and they work fine, just make sure to put something between the layers. The bigest hint I can give you on the Avery transfers is to be patient and make sure they are completely cooled down when you are ready to pull off the paper. If the paper isn't coming off easily, you may need to use a hot iron to add add more pressure to make sure that you have the designs transferred well. Don't sweat it, you'll do fine. As others have said, hardest part is deciding on the design!!

Generic designs are fast requests, such as 2014 Walt Disney World Look at photobucket designs that are already made, that can help.

Good luck, and have fun!!

I couldn't find any BTMRR shirts, so I decided to make one for my son (his favorite ride). I bought Avery brand light fabric transfers. I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but it is completely faded and peeling after 1 wash.
