T & L article on the nasty whirlpool tub.

Also, for those who don't want to mess with bleach... Automatic dishwasher detergent has lots of bleach in it, and will serve the same purpose. That's already in your unit, so no need to haul bleach along or buy it there.

Great idea Diane! Thank you! :)

The type of cleaning process for whirlpools described should be part of Disney's housekeeping. It would not take a lot of cleaning time and simply needs to be part of the cleaning protocol for the villas. Housekeeping could put some sort of small card next to the tub saying that it had been sanitized.

I hate to be a downer on this, but I feel the true need to be a bit serious about this. If you have a child who has ever had even ONE UTI, then please do not ever let that kiddo in a hot tub.

My 4 yo princess is about to lose her left kidney later next month (we are going to WDW first so that we are all in a happy place before entering a difficult time).

Now, I am not saying that her going in a hot tub caused her to suffer kidney damage...however, due to her condition I have done a ton of research and am very well schooled in the the perils of uti's, kidneys, hot tubs, and all of these issues. So please, the hot tubs say "not for kids under 17" for a lot of reasons. Protecting your kids' urinary system is one of them.

Peace.

 Wow... I'm so sorry. You must be very worried. I will not joke about this anymore. You all will be in my prayers.

3disneykids, I hope that everything goes well for you and your family.

I am really glad this post went up because I have the very same questions as everyone else. I also read the T & L article yesterday and freaked out. So, with lysol wipes in hand and cup of bleach, I will follow everyone's tips. :cutie:

My question is this: has anyone ever gotten confirmation as to the extent to which housekeeping cleans? I mean, do they truly bleach the tubs? Wipe the handles? I am just curious. I have no problem calling over to the Boardwalk and asking the questions myself but didn't know if anyone else has done this.

It's almost like you hate to be paranoid and nervous but almost for peace of mind, better to be cautious and smart about it...:teacher:

Yeah, just make sure you use DISHWASHER detergent, NOT laundry detergent.

Unless of course you are going for the foamy bubble look in the master bedroom :rotfl2:

I do use a small amount of dishwasher detergent about every third cleaning, just to get some additional cleaner into the pipes. I've never tried the tablets, but assume those would work also once they dissolve.

Good luck!

I will keep you and your family in my prayers, Please keep us updated with her progress. I wish you a great trip!!:grouphug:

They say the home toothbrush has more germs on it than the home toilet. Also the shopping cart handle has more germs than the public rest room. Gotta build resistance somehow. :rotfl2:

Supposedly toothbrushes tend to have germs FROM the home toilet! (as per Mythbusters!)

Peace.

I am sorry about your daughter. :(

I used to have UTI's often, but never from a hot tub (and I used whirlpools at the Disney Institute a number of times a week for a year).

A nurse and friend told me to cut down on my sugar to curb UTI's (this was about 10 years ago, and I'd had them for months and months - seeing a specialist and everything). And I've not had one since.
