Switching Resort Reservations?

Hi,

We’re planning our 2024 trip (our first time in a long time!) and I’m waffling between a deluxe and a value. I’m going to reserve one and if I need to update the reservation, do that at a later time.

In general, is it better to reserve a deluxe and if we change our mind go back to a value, or start with a value and upgrade to a deluxe? I’m thinking about which are more likely to fill up first and make it hard to get rooms at a later time.

If you are wanting a standard view at a Deluxe then I would book that first. The standard views at Deluxe go quickly and even if you change back to a value later a preferred room there would be cheaper than the Deluxe standard.

It probably depends on the deluxe. I think Poly and WL are pretty hot commodities and if you want a standard at one of those resorts, I would book immediately and then downgrade if you decide to at a later date.

Start with what you know you can afford with no discounts, going from value to deluxe is thousands of dollars difference. (You cannot apply a discount to a previously booked room unless there is a discounted room available for sale so this is not a way to reserve yourself a spot in case a discount pops up.) If you can afford both book what you want the most. Any hotel can get sold out, a convention or event can come in and snap up inventory at either of those levels.

I was just about to post this exact advice!!

We book the room(s) we can afford at rack rate. If a discount is released that allows us to move up to a nicer resort or nicer room category/view, we switch at that time. This allows us to get our choice of resort/room category for our budget whether a discount is released or not. I keep a running list of "upgrades" we would consider if a sale is released.

Thank you everyone for the replies! We can afford either but POP has a special sentimental value for us. I’m also looking at another (non Disney) vacation and the difference would have gone toward that, but I’m not sure if DBF will get the time off work. So, we may have a lot extra to play with, or we may have a separate trip, but won’t know until closer to 2024.
