Switching dessert for starter

No you can not. My DH is type 1 diabetic and just takes a little extra insulin if he eats the dessert....sometimes he'll skip it altogether.

Nope. This is never allowed for any reason, including medical conditions. And it's enforced.

What he can do is ask if they have an alternate dessert offering that would meet his needs.

When he takes his medicine, can he have a spoonful of sugar? :)

My mom is also a diabetic. They sometimes offered her fresh fruit for dessert. If not, just about all restaurants will have a sugar free option. If there was something sweet she really wanted, she'd just take a little extra insulin. Nala is correct. This is one area where absolutely no exceptions are made, not even for medical conditions. Believe me, my mom has tried. lol

I've noticed that desserts offered at Disney for diabetics and such are "no sugar added," not "sugar free." Jello might have a sugar-free style. A cake, cookie or pudding, not so much. You can get a bottled water substitute sometimes if you ask. I'm a diabetic. My DD will get a dessert, and I will have one spoonful of it. That's good enough for me.

My mom is diabetic. Somes restaurants have a cheese plate and they will allow this as a dessert.

I didn't get the dessert at any of the quick service meals we ate and was always offered a bottle of water to take with me in place of the dessert.

On a similar note, what about the places that have non-dessert type desserts? Like the cheese plates, can you order that as your dessert but have it delivered like an appetizer before the meal?

You'll have to ask at every restaurant where you want to do this. The Disney owned restaurants might be more willing.

At the third party restaurants the cheese plate would have to be on the dessert menu. If it is only on the appetizer section of the menu you wouldn't be able to order it as your dessert because they are reimbursed by Disney according to the rules of the plan. If it is on the dessert menu, they might serve it first, but some of the restaurants are very particular when it comes to the dining plan so they might not allow it.
