Im currenty booked at POR 1/27-2/3 on a Disney Visa discount but just checking out other options I see ASMo (preferred room) is $600 cheaper. That's no chump change. Ive stayed at POR several times and I do love it there but the prospect of saving $600 plus trying a new resort has got me tempted to switch.
Im traveling solo, never stayed in a Value before and main concern would be noise. People/kids at pool or just walking past the room doesn't bother me but thin walls and hearing people next door/upstairs and loud door slamming would. I stayed a Universal Dockside earlier this year and you would not believe how loud the door slams were. Anyways, looking for opinions on if you'd switch or stay put. Also, I have a car so transportation isn't an issue.

I think there's a dance team competition that weekend so I'd steer clear of the all stars.

ETA: Even if they're not at movies specifically, I'd still steer clear.

Oof. Yes that's a very good reason !

We just returned from Dockside a few days ago. It was ok, but definitely not impressed. We've stayed at movies and por multiple times and I totally say go for movies. It's fun, our favorite value, and you're saving a good amount of money. It's also more compact and we prefer the food court there. We've never had a noise issue there, but if you're sensitive to noise, I'd say stay away from a room facing the pools.

I would try gottalovepluto's suggestion and try a split stay. Play with the dates to see how you want to split it and the total amount of money that you would save. We tried a split stay the last trip. I have never stayed at either resort, but I would go to the new resort first, then the one you know you will enjoy. Have a great trip!

Looking at the map the preferred rooms are close to the main pool if you get one facing the pool it may be louder. With a note that time of year is not good pool weather a lot of days so the nights should be ok. People slamming doors… that is the luck of the draw at any resort. Can’t give good advice on the resorts I did stay at POR over 20 years ago and ASM around 25 years ago. I did like POR but as I recall the room layouts are the same at both with POR being larger. I also recall liking the theming of the all stars. 600 goes a long way for one person to make up for if you find you dislike it that much but I would doubt dislike but maybe prefer would be the worst.

Personally I like to stay at the All-Stars and, on my Disney Springs day, take the boat to PO for a visit. I’ve never had a problem with noise. I think there may have been some kind of dance group at ASMu last January while I was there, but the girls were cheerful and polite, not a problem at all!

It’s really a matter of whether the money saved is worth the “risk” of not enjoying your experience, and I feel like it’s hard to make that call for someone else. But personally I’ve never understood why some people avoid the All-Stars. To me, their rooms look fresher and more modern than a lot of the more expensive hotels!

How much time will you be in the parks vs at the resort? $600 could cover a lot of great meals. We are park people, so the resort is mainly for sleeping (and occasional napping). We love the All Stars, enjoy the theming and energy, and never find then too noisy.
