Switch cash ressie to points?

We currently have an end of August trip planned at VWL. My DH has decided in the past week that he wants to buy DVC resale and he thinks I can make it all happen before our trip (he must think I have more pixie dust than Tink )! We are waiting for a response from a seller, but I'm thinking even if everything went smoothly, we might be the new owners by the beginning of August. Has anyone had any experience switching a cash ressie to a member point ressie? Would there be a reason we wouldn't be able to do it? Our home resort will be BCV but since less than 7 months I can't see where that would matter. Any advice?

Cash inventory and DVC points inventory are completely separate, so you couldn't just convert a cash villa to one paid for with points.

As for an August trip, it'll be cutting it close. Resale takes about 60 days from when a contract is sent to Disney for ROFR, so best-case scenario is you'd be closed and in the system about a month before your trip. You might be able to string together a points reservation, but like you said, you'll have to be flexible about where you stay and you might need to stay at more than one resort.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am so afraid it won't all come together. Unfortunately the contract comes with banked points that we might not be able to use. Do you know how hard it is to rent out points so they don't go to waste?

The easiest way to rent points after you close would be to use one of the rental brokers, David's comes very highly recommended. Normally you get $10 per point, but if the points are close to their expiration, I think you may get a few dollars less.

It will depend on how long you have before the banked points expire.

Your problem will be availability. Points are worthless unless you can make a reservation with them. Availability is often very limited once you get closer to arrival.
