Swine flu has hit my house!

That stinks but isn't it dangerous to not treat everyone? I'd be pulling some $$$ from my vacation fund for the meds.

My daughter (8) was diagnosed with the flu today. They're not testing for H1N1 anymore, but I'm betting that's what she has. Our dr. would not prescribe Tamiflu for her. Apparently the new guidelines say it should be saved for those who have the flu AND a complicating factor. Kind of frustrating. He said if she still has a fever by Thursday, it's swine. Blech.

my 12 yr old has it also...they gave us all tamiflu to prevent us from getting it and so far it has worked. He was pretty sick,he was throwing up and had a fever and chills poor guy!

I think I have it :scared1:

I have had a runny nose and cough like a normal allergy or whatever. The runny nose went away and I have had a cough for 3 weeks now.

I woke up this morning with major chills, fever, and sort of feeling like I want to throw up.
It is a HORRIBLE cough. I sound like a man it is so bad and my throat is sore now.

vacation fund? :lmao: There is no vacation funds. I have no funds anywhere- my husband is getting a partial paycheck tomorrow to cover it.

Yup, we have the tamiflu because of asthma. He's been running fever since Friday. Today was 102- it's getting higher as each day goes on.

Oh yes, that sounds exactly like it. My sons cough is scary. Very deep- from the chest! Still have fever since Friday.

** I wanted everyone to know if you think you have the swine flu and you have asthma ... don't mess around. My son woke up this morning unable to breath. He used his inhaler 3 separate times ... which helped some, but he had to be rushed to the drs for a breathing treatment. His fever was 102- highest since he started one on Friday. The dr office was packed with kids but when we showed up she stopped everything and helped him. He had a breathing treatment and put on a steriod inhaler. Chest x-ray was normal... it's the asthma with the flu = scary crap!!! :scared1: I asked about the fever and she said with the flu it's lasting well over a week. Another way to determine if it's the swine flu... fever lasts a lot longer than a cold.

The tamiflu isn't helping him like it did me and my daughter. He did start on it within the 48 hours. Just not helping him. It's running at full strength. It's terrible!!!

OP, I am so sorry to hear your family has been suffering with this awful strain of flu. It's one thing to go through it yourself -- another thing totally to watch your kids suffer. :sad1: Not fun.

I am counting the days until we can get our swine flu shots. My 5-year old will definitely get the nasal mist. And I will get the shot. I have lung/breathing issues and the swine flu would be awful for me as I've heard it can go straight to the lungs. I'm not taking any chances.

I've heard if there is someone in the family who is compromised or more prone to serious complications from the swine flu then no one in the family should get the flu mist. I would suggest having your daughter get the shot too even though I'm sure she'd rather not get a shot.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that!! My family practice physician said that they would only have the flu mist available initially, so the plan was to get that for DD immediately, with me to follow with a shot when those were available.

Thanks for passing that info along. I'll ask my doc about it, for sure!

I have a deep cough and everytime I cough, I pee my pants (I'm only 16!!) :guilty:

I just took my temperature and it is 102.5

You are welcome! We got a letter from our doctor's office with this info (my daughter is compromised) and I also heard the same thing from a doctor on TV.

Hi- It's B/c the mist is a live virus, the shot is dead.

If it's live, there's a risk of actual infection.

Update from my world of Ms Swiney Hiney (as another DIS'er called me)-- Still have fever-- 101.4, still in bed. Slight cough. Not quite as achy, but keep going from hot to freezing. Sore throat, HEADACHE is awful.

No one else in the house has gotten it- but I'm staying in bed.

Hope everyone feels better quickly. ANd yes- if you have asthma- get to the Dr immediately. It can get ugly fast.

According to your sig, you have 2 trips to WDW planned, and yet you're saying you have no vacation funds, and you're unable to afford medicine for your family? Am I missing something here?

I'm so sorry that everyone is so sick with this stuff--NC is an elevated rate right now for swine flu cases according to the CDC
I'm another NC mom here--I got the dreaded call today from DD's special needs preschool that she was sick, the teacher was out w/ the "flu" and so where 1/2 of the students in her class. No idea why I wasn't told this when I dropped her off this morning???? She has severe lung scaring and BPD that never resolved, extreme asthma, etc from her 25 week premature birth She started retching this evening, so the doc called in zofran for her--she has the fever, doesn't want to move off the couch, wants to eat but can't, and the runny nose--thank god it hasn't hit her lungs yet, but I'm scared of what the next few days are going to bring...
The doc told me to call in the am if she was still the same and they would prescribe the tamiflu for her, she's on the list of high risk kids, we'll be within a 24 hr window of starting treatment. She took Tamiflu 1 1/2 years ago for the regular flu, (the year that the flu vaccine was off and everyone got it anyway) and did fine on it, her only side effect was hyperactivity, no nightmares or other side effects.
Best of luck to everyone who is having to deal with this horrible stuff-hope everyone feels better soon

awww, have your mom take you to the dr. I really hope you feel better soon!!

Hmm, I have one trip planned (in Nov) for work. I'm a travel agent for Disney and there's a conference. Just because I have a trip planned doesn't mean I have the money sitting in the bank for it. But thanks for pointing it out.

Oh man, NC is getting hit hard. Just to give you a heads up- his chest problem and bad cough started on day 5. It's not pretty!

But he did eat a little something tonight. First time since Friday! :yay:

Exactly! Watching your kid(s) be so sick is first off so stressful and painful. You want to take their pain away. I want to fix him and have him feel better at the snap of a finger.

Then maybe I'd be re-thinking that vacation in 55 days. :confused3

OMG, ya know what, I'm not here to explain my checking account... I already answered this - if you had read through my responses.

I have a 'work' trip planned through Disney. It's a conference at disney because I'm a travel agent for disney. Not sure it's really anyones business that I have a trip planned and no money at the moment to pay for it. Why is it some people can be supportive- and others are here to be a smart ...
I'm really stressed over having a very sick kid - and forking over an extra $335 this week on meds really sucked... on top of the $700 I paid this week in heath ins. Plus, $50 in drs bills.

I really wish people would 'think' before posting....

One more NC mom here!

OP - I completely understand about unexpected expenses! Try not to worry, things will work themselves out!

Just wanted to add that I work at a middle school (in the office) and we had so many sick kids wanting to call home it was scary. I think I took about 20 kids temps - all around 99 -before lunch. But you can tell by their eyes they really felt bad. I know parents have responsibilities at work - so do I. But at 8:00 am, we already had a line to call home. I know most of these kids felt bad before they came to school. I would just ask that parents talk to your kids before they leave for school, make sure they are up to it if they have been sick over the weekend. Just because they are not running a fever does not mean they are well.

With our school nurses spread so thin, it is hard on the office staff who are not nurses to care for these kids that came to school sick. I know sometimes things come on you quickly, but most of the kids said they had been sick all weekend. Our teachers have been instructed to provide make up work and to be prepared that kids may be out for up to 10 days with the flu.

One last vent....parents please make sure your child's school has updated contact information. We had several kids that had contacts with no working phone numbers and the child did not know any new numbers. Had to sit at school all day sick/vomiting. Very sad. This happens all the time, not just during times of illness.

Thanks for letting me vent!!!! Feels good to get it off my chest :)
